The hotel was nice and clean, the view was spectacular, the staff and manager were really nice and obliging! The food and wine was very good and we will love to visit this hotel and Santa Maria del Monte again! The hotel suit maybe best for grown ups or at least youths (together with family) beacause of the cliff around.

The hotel is located in the village of Santa Maria del Monte in Varese. It is right next to the funculator which is handy if not driving. We drove and they provided free parking. The hotel itself was beautiful. The food in their restaurant was very good, it was a little pricey but comparable for the quality. Their pasta dishes were 14€ which is quite reasonable and if you stay they were offering a deal for 30€ of an appetizer and main that I did not read until after dinner, unfortunately no one mentioned it to us.
The breakfast was good and fresh, served in a beautiful breakfast room. I felt it was overpriced at 14€ each, which is what we were charged for the kid's breakfasts. I had booked a triple room but there was some confusion (I used a 3rd party site) when we showed up as they were expecting 2 adults rather than 2 adults and 2 children. The gentleman checking us in seemed rather upset and I was worried if we would have a place to stay, even though I offered to pay a supplement. The matrona (Elderly female owner) seemed to have no problem as my children are small and even offered a crib for my son. She was very kind, friendly and accommodating for our stay. The room was large, more than enough space for us and it had a balcony with a great view. A very pretty, quaint room.
We walked up to the church in the morning through the tiny cobblestoned roads, it is an amazing setting and it was a great accompaniment to our stay.
It's challenging booking for four when traveling Europe and I was disappointed with our check-in but I am sure there are policies about how many people can stay in room. The problem is when your children are young you need to have some flexibility as they are not old enough to be in their own room. In the end we were pleased with our stay and we would recommend it to friends, it was well worth the journey to the top of the hill. Very pleasant stay, would have been 5 stars but for the check-in, I almost rated it three but that would be unfair as the female owner was lovely and the place was excellent.

Where to start....?
The location : unique on a hill overseeing Varese and the lake, in a small medieval village.
The room and facilities : all you need, relatively large rooms with all facilities and a well-functioning wifi.
Breakfast : healthy one with local specialities and plenty of choice.
Dinner : top-quality restaurant with original and refined food.
Service : within a second staff makes you feel at home...can't be any better!
In summary : to be highly recommended !!!!!

A jewel of a little hotel, high atop the mountain overlooking Varese. The restaurant is a must! Just a 45 minute drive from Milan, in a town with narrow streets and a Unesco site series of chapels. Silvio the the chef/ owner could not have been any more accommodating.

I remembered this hotel as exclusive and top notch but over the past years ( new owners) the hotel has not been maintained as before ( carpets, towels,...) Still a nice place on top of the Sacro Monte. Breakfast was really disappointing compared to before.
