Elegant, cool, discreet former hunting lodge in lovely Lucca countryside

Geoff C on 10/06/2017 17:13

Just home from a 10-day stay at Villa Marta. 2nd visit. What a lovely place and we were not disappointed with our decision to return. Took a first floor room in the Annex which was very comfortable and elegantly furnished giving a cool and calm effect ( plus built-in safe, good shower, air con, TV, telephone, minibar, large comfortable bed). The house is lovely and is set in superb grounds with stunning views of mountains all around. Buildings and rooms appear in good states of repair and reception is on the first floor of the main house and is a lovely experience in its own right. Enjoyed breakfast on the terrace each morning – wide choice available – hot and cold buffet type which includes fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, cold meats, cheeses, juices, yogurts and pastries. Waiters serve teas and coffees at table. They also provide specially prepared (multi-language) newspaper cuttings /abstract service. Waiter service available at breakfast and around pool area. Staff at reception and at table all very efficient and friendly. We had a minor issue with the in-room hairdryer which was resolved quickly and helpfully. I think the restaurant is open for dinners most nights but didn’t try it (for no reason other than we gravitated towards Lucca with its wide range of options and the chance of a stroll through the night-time streets). That said, we saw the staff setting up the Villa Marta terrace for dinner and when we returned each evening, it looked very appealing and (for some we guess) could be classed as romantic.

The mid-sized swimming pool is set back from the hotel in a walled and grassed area. The pool never seemed full (in fact for certain periods, we enjoyed it to ourselves despite the hotel appearing to be pretty full based on car numbers).Even though the pool area/gardens filled up (but not in an unattractive or over-use way) there is sufficient space for people to enjoy their own space in relation to the sun/pool/buildings. Sun loungers, chairs and tables area available with some sheltered and shady (under the trees) areas available (but no parasols). Guests can collect pool-use towels at Reception. Pool itself was refreshing (not warm but not too chilled) and most welcome after soaking up the hot Tuscan sun.

The minor road leading from the main (Lucca-Pisa) road to the albergo can be a little tricky (when passing other traffic, it can be narrow and winding in places – but not prone in my experience to speeding vehicles) but well passable with adequate care and attention. Having visited previously, I think the hotel has altered (improved) the main entrance (from the road) to the hotel’s car park, but great care still needs to be exercised when exiting (there are mirrors in place to assist). Two car parks – the main and an overflow – are available to guests. CCTV seems to be in operation and car park gates are operable by push button from your car's window. That said, once you arrive at the hotel, you immediately sense the relaxed atmosphere and you feel far from any traffic or other noise or activity. All helped by the beautiful mountainous surroundings and lovely cared for hotel grounds. A great place to unwind. We toured around the area usually returning to the pool mid-afternoons. Among our trips were: Barga; Borgo A Mozzano; Montacatini Terme (and Alto); and Pisa. All easily driveable in a morning we found. Visited Lucca during the mornings on occasions and each evening. Never tired of it and just wandering its streets and squares is brilliant. Some great architecture, churches and shops. Walk the walls (took us about an hour to do the circuit) for some stunning views down into the town and beyond to the countryside.

It’s about a 10 minute drive into Lucca from Villa Marta where we usually parked in the Carducci pay and display car park about a 10-minute stroll outside the walls/gate to the south of the town. All easy enough but we used a sat nav in the early days as certain parts of the journey to and from Villa Marta into Lucca (as you leave Lucca the route can – for us anyway – be a bit tricky junctions wise until you get used to them). Plenty of fuel stations on road out of Lucca – at least one of them 24 hours (pre-payment system). Pisa airport was about 30-40 mins drive from hotel. In-room wifi (free) easily accessible and reliable for our purposes.

A lovely small hotel with a restaurant and very friendly staff

We enjoyed 5 nights here and had a really pleasant stay. Breakfast was really good and attentive. The only complaint was that the eggs and bacon were always luke warm. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The bed was pretty comfy although a little firm. The place is really peaceful too. Eve food was pretty good also. We found a fantastic ice cream bar down the road called La Perla. Very good value.

Dream getaway

Beautiful property in the hillsides above Pisa on the way to old Lucca. Isolated from the world, and so well maintained. Great restaurant just up the small road, and breakfast in the basement in the AM. Very comfortable beds, big room, and unbelievable views. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. The perfect getaway from the more touristy parts of the country.

You are welcomed by a greeting from the very friendly staff into a lovely living room area. This former hunting lodge is set right outside the walled town of Lucca on a quiet but very accessible street with some beautiful country homes. We had a car to get back and forth to Lucca but it would be a pleasant bike ride. We were there in the Fall and could hear groups of boar hunters heading out.

Our room was pretty, a bit too much drape-like fabric for my taste, but very appropriate for the villa. The bathroom was large and had a great shower. Breakfast was simple and we actually ended up visiting the coffee shop at the end of the street.

Lucca itself was terrific. There were tons of locals out walking everywhere. There is a huge path on the rampart and everybody was strolling. Terrific city! The staff at the villa gave us very good restaurant recommendations. The location of Lucca was very easy- just 20 minutes direct shot to Pisa and 1 hour to Florence.

Beautiful hotel, great staff

Very nice room, great size and clean. The bathroom seemed recently renovated (or at least it looked new and clean). The area and the hotel's grounds are simply beautiful. The room was even nicer than on the photos. The breakfast was ok. There was parking.
We only stayed for a night as part of our Tuscany road trip. We checked in very late and the staff was very polite and helpful.
I would definitely go back to that hotel to stay longer.
