Two Pounds of Motel in a One Pound Box

Algiers is a small motel on the Treasure Island beach area. Located next door to the Arvilla. This is important as Irma took out the Algiers sign so if you see the Arvilla, the Algiers is just to the right of it. The Jamaican is on the other side of the Algiers. (The Algiers is promised a new sign sometime in December.) Architecturally, the design is one-shoe-box with a pool. Nothing to note at all. Compare this to the classic, mid-century modern design of the Sea Chest nearby which is a great example of the Sarasota school architects of the mid-1900's. Windows are casement style, but the hand cranks have been removed so as to prevent opening them. All in all, the property shows its 70+ years of commercial use, but it is clean and well-kept.
Room 1-7 are on the ground floor. 8 and above are 2nd floor. There are 16 steps with a switchback on the stairway to the 2nd level. Units 7 and 17 are on the beach-side end of the motel and have a view of the very deep Treasure Island beach which is about 330 yards deep (distance to the water from the motel.) The ground level is “almost” handicap accessible. Depending on location there is a 1-step up to the parking level and beach access walkway.
Our room, 5 was located centrally on first floor and directly across from the pool entrance (that could be good news or..... bad if noisy.) Actually the entrance to the pool is only 25 feet from the motel room's door. I could easily hear people talking outside our room as well as traffic noise from Gulf Blvd..so be prepared for a higher level of ambient noise than you might like.
About the room (#5 in particular):
-TV a 32” flat screen that does have two available HDMI inputs and one USB. A similar tv was in the separate bedroom. Basic channels (no premium). A 42 or 55” screen would have been appreciated. I was able to connect my Kindle Firestick with no problems.
-MR Coffee coffee maker with a basket filter. 3 packs of complimentary coffee included.
-Microwave
-Small but “full size” refrigerator
-Electric oven with 4 burners (larger than usual for a motel)
-Single sink with cabinet storage above and below.
-Plates, etc service for 4
-Furniture in the living room area was a table with 4 chairs, a sofa, coffee table, end table, and a chest below the wall-mounted tv.
-WIFI was a measured 9 MBPS download speed.
-Ice Machine: a single ice cube tray in your freezer (hopefully you'll find yours with some ice in it)
-Dishwasher: a bottle of detergent, a washcloth and teeny towel.
-Motel Soap: do you remember the little postage-stamp sized soaps in motels? Well, they are still available and living at the Algiers. (This is for information and not a complaint, per-Se, as the Algiers is not the only motel still using the little soaps.)
-Doors and door jams live a life of interference.
-Unit entrance door is at best a heavy duty storm door with a really old key that operates only the lock in the handle and not the deadbolt (which can be set from the interior of the room.)
-Two closets and an queen-size bed that's seen its better days. With one nightstand, lamp and wall-mounted 32”tv
-Night-manager: phone number, please feel free to call
-There are two wall-mounted Mitsubishi AC/Heat units each with a remote control. The A/C units are very quiet.
-Missing....the ubiquitous roll of paper towels a motel efficiency unit typically has.
-Limited housekeeping on weekends.
Parking, like all the beach-side older motels, is extremely tight with one space (exactly) per room and the spaces vary in accessibility. You will really appreciate the back-up camera on your vehicle! If you have a Fiat 500 or Kia Soul you won't have problems. If a crew cab 3/4 ton pickup, there are 4 spaces at front of motel marked for pickups.
Perfect location and VERY clean & well kept

My husband and I were just @ St Pete earlier this year and stayed at the Grand on St Pete Beach but we paid an arm and a leg so we were trying to find another hotel more affordable for this trip. I was SUPER overwhelmed trying to find a great and reasonably priced hotel in Treasure Island for the week since there are soooo many hotels/resorts/motels in a row. I filtered hotel options based on being on the beach with a pool, walking distance to Johns Pass based on best cost and best customer reviews. Algiers had the best price and the best location right on the beach and had great reviews! When we checked in, we asked for a top floor room and the owner upgraded up to Apartment room versus studio for same cost. We ended up staying in Room #11 and was SO impressed with how clean and well kept the place was. Thank GOD we ended up asking for this other room, but we would have been miserable in the studio room with the bed being right by the front door and windows. You could hear everythinggg outside the room and even feel someone walking by. Luckily with the Apartment setup, our bedroom was in the back and had its own room so that helped block out the sounds. The apt style room also had a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, coffee maker pots & pans, plates, silverware etc so we were able to walk down the street to the grocery store to get stuff to make our own bfast every morning. (Don't expect housekeeping to wash dishes for you, however :) but wasn't a big deal) It was SO nice walking out and being right on the beach and coming back to use the relaxing and pristine pool. The other guests were older and quiet and the owners were hardworking and maintained the property above and beyond all the others. The grounds were perfectly manicured and stunning. The AC units were new and quiet and nice and cold. The only and pretty significant CON about this place was I could NOT seem to get a nice, hot shower and the beds were very uncomfortable. The showers would start hot and quickly turn cold causing me to have to rush out shivering. The beds were very hard and creaky and by the end of the week, my bad was in agony. If these two things were addressed, it would have been a 10 outta 10 excellent rating.

I stayed here about a year ago and was not necessarily pleased with the room, so I gave it another try this past weekend. Upon securing my reservation, I was provided a view of the room and was impressed. We stayed in room 8, which is in a corner on the second floor. The Algiers is an older 2 story complex with less than 20 rooms. Overall, the room was clean with two flat screens; one in the living room that also shares a kitchen area with a sleeper sofa and another in the bedroom. Upon arrival, I was promptly greeted by the attendant, which I believe to be the owner. He was pleasant and prompt with my reservations. He apologized for the lack of storefront sign due to damage from recent hurricane Irma and assured me he was waiting for it's replacement. There are two drawbacks from the location. One is parking, which is extremely limited and the walk to the beach. Cabanas are now available by Taylor Rental, but not directly I front of the motel itself. Overall, we were pleased with the accommodations and will stay there again.
EXCELLENT!

We were scheduled to stay at Algiers Gulf Resort for a week last week (8/18/17 - 8/25/17). The resort on the outside says "Old Florida Charm" on the inside it is immaculate and updated. The staff were extremely friendly and kind. Amira did an excellent job cleaning every day. We unfortunately had to leave early due to a family emergency. The management was very kind and compassionate and refunded us money, which we did not at all expect. We will be staying here again!
GRUMPY, UNCARING NEW MANEGEMENT!

i was thinking of staying here, but when i went to office, the man there was so grumpy, condecending, and just plain rude!! the prices for this motel was too expensive!! wish the old mangement never sold the algiers! they no longer accept dogs so those customers are gone, but the bayside inn across the street welcomes small dogs and are very pleasant and caring, unlike the algiers! Don't waste your time and money on the algiers motel. they are just plain rude!! no excuse for that at all! Stay next door at the arvilla motel, where the staff is very kind and caring and customers are appreciated and welcomed! or tahitian motel a few doors down. those are wonderful motels! stay away from the algiers!!
