My room at the Sun Plaza was basic at best: no good temperature control, slightly uncomfortable bed. The Hotel's restaurant is popular among locals but vegetarian selections are hard to come by and other services at this hotel are minimal. The rooms are small and clean, with tiny closets and refrigerators, but the soundproofing is terrible: I could hear my neighbors draw their curtains. During the night, I was repeatedly awakened by a banging noise from an exit door rattling on a windy night. Only one small vending machine, so trips to the konbeni were necessary. And the hotel's clients seemed to be a bit frightening - mainly disheveled men who seemed fascinated by the foreigners. The harbor views are nice but only visible from the locked fire exit ladder-wells at the end of the hall. Amami-oshima is a lovely place and I have no quibbles with the staff, all of whom seemed eager to help, but if I visit again I would likely choose another hotel.

Arriving from Tokyo we took the bus downtown (Naze) - about an hour. This hotel is in the middle of town, walking distance from everywhere you want to go in town. Free welcome drink - we had a nice cold beer. Japanese breakfast thrown in. Room was fine. Corridor smelled a little 'toilety' for some reason. Common hot bath on the 4th floor. Just fine for a first night if you're staying in town. Lobby service typically good. Free wi-fi in the lobby area - not in room. Near cafes, supermarket, bars, yaki tori shops and a convenience store. Next door to Toyota rental cars too.
