What People are saying

Best lodge of our trip!

Sam_castor on 07/11/2017 22:18

Really loved our stay at Serena Amboseli. Of the 3 lodges we stayed at on our safari, it was the best...great central location in the park, great rooms, delicious meals, terrific STAFF, refreshing pool. All our expectations were surpassed. Total 5 star experience (and I don't give out many 5 stars).

I would highly recommend the 90 minute nature walk lead by a Masai, available at the lodge (about $20-25 USD/person if my recollection is correct). Jonathan was our guide and he was terrific....even rescued a goat drowning in the swamp! Wear a hat and lots of sunscreen. Walking on the land was a very different experience to being in a vehicle....lots of tracks, lots of dung! lots of bones. Jonathan made it very worthwhile.

The pool was also so refreshing after a hot day in the sun. It is very well looked after.

Nothing beat having a beer before dinner on the patio/terrace and watching animals at the waterhole in front of the lodge.

Wild wild beautiful park lodge

A visit to the famous Amboseli National Game park takes you to a breathtaking view of thousands of wildlife. Among the big five..lions, elephants, Buffalo's, giraffes and rhinoceros you will see laughing hyenas. Your days ends and you come to Amboseli Serena Lodge..a very beautiful 5 star lodge in the heart of nature land. Good food, excellent service, the decor and cool background music tells it all. Singing birds and jumping monkeys outside make you feel at home. Those cosy kingsized beds will make you wake up to a fresh new day and realise that you are in the middle of Africa..sweet oh sweet.

Our room was small but clean... i love the lobby and restaurant design a lot.. but not a room... in the morning you can see elephants are walking and the beautiful kilimanjaro mountain... be carefull of monkeys.. if you dont like animals you shouldnt travel to kenya

This is a most interesting place to stay In that it is situated right in the area where you will be on safari. It is a series on individual rooms with a lovely balcony. One night an elephant came right up to the balcony of one of our group. The Rangers came quickly to chase it away but it tells you how integrated this lodge is with its environment. The rooms are large and nicely decorated with African art. The common areas are nice andthefood was good.

Self Drive to Amboseli Park & Serena Lodge

Daniel M on 27/10/2017 19:23

We've been to several parks around Kenya but Amboseli was one that we haven't done together as a family in over a decade. Usually we'd just buy a full tour package and enjoy being driven around in a van with a good guide. But this time round, I felt like trying out my exploration skills and opted to take this trip with our ever faithful Prado 120 D4-D - 2006 model.
This car has been maintained as stock except for the Steel Bull bar at the front and a snorkel to get cleaner air into the engine. Everything else including the suspension system is as it came from Toyota. As the notion goes, these sort of cars are unbreakable and whoever breaks them is an idiot. 😁

We left Nairobi at around 8:30am and was aiming to get to Serena Lodge by lunchtime, 12:30pm. We chose to use the Mombasa Rd-Emali-Oloitoktok route as it offered more on-tarmac distance than any other route. The last time we heard, the Namanga route was bad due to potholes and deterioration of the tarmac road in certain places.
The drive was easy except for the numerous trucks heading to and from the port city Mombasa which often meant fast sections punctuated by slow traffic await to ovetake the tortoise-speed trucks.

After Merrueshi which is about 150km from Nairobi you take a right turn towards the Amboseli national park gate and this is where the real 4x4 experience comes alive! In keeping with the bush adventure atmosphere, the road is suddenly rough, murram(unpaved and surfaced with gravel) and peculiarly filled with ridges that aim to break apart even the most strongest of cars. For those 4wd enthusiasts, you will know that it is at this point that you aim to find what we call the "Sweet spot"... Just the right speed to keep the suspension busy but not overworked. Too slow and you'll be shaking everything & everyone in the car. Too fast and you risk losing control and finding yourself in a ditch or settled upside down by the bushy roadside. This goes on for approximately (very painful for both car & man) 30km before reaching Amboseli park gate. The procedure is to stop outside the gate, go in and pay via debit/credit card or Mpesa only (cash not permitted) then they let you in and off towards your preferred hotel.
The road is still as tough but suddenly the distraction of beautiful wildlife makes it seems acceptable. You will quickly realise that this park has an abundance of elephants more than any other animal. They're are all over the place and evidence of this is further confirmed with the number of broken or uprooted trees dotting the wide areas of Amboseli.
The landscape is unusually dry and extremely dusty. However, Amboseli also has the amazing feature of holding several swampy areas that never dry off and this are good areas to spot wildlife especially the many herds of elephants. Other animals include:Zebras, Wildebeests,Buffalos, gazelles, hyenas, lions, etc. The park is also home so a host of colourful birds so those of the 'natural flying club' will have lots to see here.

Amboseli Serena Lodge has that old charm to it..... It isn't modern in any way, yet everything functions very well. The rooms are clean with a hot water shower readily available. I was a little bit disappointed that despite our clear advance alerts that I'd be coming with the family, we still found our room set up with 3 single beds spread seperately across the space. I expected a double bed for us & a single one for the little one, so they get 3 🌟 🌟 🌟 for not paying enough attention to instructions. Regardless, this would not be allowed to dampen my spirits. I'd be more precise and thorough next time to be sure we get the right setup.

The food on offer for lunch was amazingly delicious and sumptuous.... Wide selection of fresh food, wine and drinks. It is easy to tell that this lodge is run on many years of experience so service is exceptionally good.

Day 2:
It was beautiful with lots of animals to see but also extremely dusty. Amboseli dust winds are blinding and can be frustrating to cope with. You obviously want to keep your windows open to view the wildlife yet the amount of dust caused by the winds and the occasional passing tour vans can be upsetting. Regardless, it is worth the time you spend out there.
Exercise patience though. Animals aren't aware of our haste nor desire to view them upclose so they will go about their normal daily routine (hunt/graze, feed, lie down, sleep and walk away into the unknown) at their leisure.
