Disappointing

This hotel should be two stars if the Dutch hotel classification was applied correctly. The room was slightly dirty and there was an old spoon under the bed. It was cold when we came in, but did heat up quickly. The bed was comfortable, but the room was old and small. The sink had been glued, the carpet had stains. Overall, the room had no comfort, no amenities that you would find in other hotels. However, the breakfast was plenty and of good quality. You can buy spa access to the public spa with the room, but it is not part of the hotel as such - the hotel does not even give you a dressing gown. Spa access is for one day, so if you stay one night only, you can choose if you use the spa on the arrival day or departure day.
The receptionist does not have any info about the spa, and asks you to use the spa reception, which is ok, because they are separate. However, the hotel should not advertise itself as having a spa.
Who on Earth gave this place 4 stars??

As frequent travelers (both for work and leisure), my boyfriend and I have stayed in over 30 hotels this year, and this was definitely the worst experience we have had so far. It is the first time I write a bad review here, but it is definitely worth it, as I hope it will help other people to avoid such a bad experience for themselves.
The hotel is rated at a 4 star hotel, perhaps this is due to its Thermen amenities (which, of course, you can only access by paying extra, as the room price gives you access to nothing) but everything else shouts outdated, run down and dirty. Maybe it was worth 4 stars 25 years ago, but somebody should check again and update this rating, since I don't think it gets even to 2 stars, given our experience.
(In timeline order)
1. Advertised as 4 star, as soon as you walk in to the lobby you can see there hasn't been any money invested into the place for at least 10 years.
2. Room (207) looks like a hostel room. Tissue dispensing toilet paper, a hospital-like bin suspended off the floor, ceiling above shower is cracked and could come down at anytime, carpet run down and discolored, the paint or the room's walls is falling off, bed's are barely 3 star standard, furniture outdated, hair dryer next to desk in bedroom (?), room was very cold when entering, balcony was extremely dirty. In one word: Depressing. More like a cheap motel next to any road.
3. Their website quotes " If you are looking for a reinvigorating and relaxing Hotel & Spa in Maastricht or Sittard, Amrâth Hotel Born-Sittard Thermen * is your best option ". The hotel is right beside a busy road and a gas station. Our hotel room looked onto that road. Literally, nothing to do or nowhere to walk to around the hotel, only the road and factories. The pictures placed on the website are carefully selected & now we know why.
4. We decided to have some drinks in the bar: my boyfriend's second drink got served in the same dirty glass as his first drink. Perhaps out of laziness or lack of quality of service.
5. The worst dinner we have ever had in a hotel! Not wanting to travel anymore that day, we decided to get dinner at the hotel's restaurant. My boyfriend's tagliatelle was double overcooked and didn't need any chewing, it was like eating porridge. The sauce had zero flavour. I had the ribs and, following the trend of this hotel, they were disgusting and the cheapest meat used that was decorated with 2 blobs of bbq sauce. Before the ribs entered the hotel's kitchen they must have been already cooked and all the 'chef' had to do is defrost it and heat it up. At no time did the waiter ask us how our food was. I guess he knew as well of the quality of food that they where serving.
6. COLD SHOWER! 10 am we woke up and to top it all off from the day before there was no warm water, we let the shower run for 20 minutes to see if there would be warmer water and this was not the case. Again, 4 stars? WHERE??
7. 10.30am breakfast: no service, no cutlery and no napkins (had to take it from another table), most tables where not cleared, soft eggs where hard boiled and the pancakes where still frozen.
8. Checking out, again no one asked how our stay was, I wouldn't be surprised all the staff are instructed not to ask as they know what state their hotel is in.
As you can clearly see from above we are more than not happy with our stay at the Amrâth Hotel Born-Sittard Thermen. Do learn from our experience: avoid this place!

Nice hotel to take after the day long spa-wellness. The wellness center is not huge, but big enough to get rest in whole body and mind. Restaurant is very good in wellness area. Breakfast was good and various.

Good bed but too expensive!!! You have to pay for the swimming pool and all extra activities... so badddd. One of the girl who serve in the bar is completely out. We asked dessert and she didn't serve us.
Not to be recommended to anyone, especially families!

Family trip with baby to visit family in the region. The hotel seemed ok-ish though we were surprised by the prices given that it's located on the Dutch countryside (compared to Amsterdam, for example)
In a nutshell: VERY DISAPPOINTING - poor service, unfriendly staff, an NO HOT WATER IN ROOM (in a spa hotel!!!). As requested by the hotel we did fill in a feedback form on-site as well as an email --> no response from the hotel!!!
Details of the stay below:
- Lose electricity plug and hanging cables from the wall: A hairdryer mounted next to the TV (???) whose cable was hanging lose, a cable hanging from the wall right where the baby bed had been set up. Not only leaves this a very bad impression of the hotel behind but given that we had booked a baby bed for our 20 months old son, it is absolutely irresponsible to leave old-fashioned, lose electricity plugs (near the TV) and cables around!!!
- No hot water supply in the evening: There was no hot water available in the evening, and it was impossible to give a bath to our baby. Of course it was absolutely unthinkable for us to take a shower to wash off some travelling fatigue!
- Holes in the wall
- Thin walls and merely a thin door separating us from the neighboring room: This implied a complete lack of privacy for both sides, and we unfortunately had to bear unpleasant conversations of the neighbors! That said, it made it very difficult for our baby to sleep.
- Broken equipment: The water boiler "power button" was so worn off, and given the age of the water boiler that did not come as a surprise, that we were worried to use it fearing an electricity shock
- Filth: The room was NOT clean, and far from any standard we are used to for 4 stars!
- Staircase and only an elevator for goods! Again, since we were travelling with a baby it would've been more pleasant to not have to walk up 2 staircases or, as we consider standard for a 4 star hotel, at least offer assistance carrying up the luggage!
- Unfriendly and impolite personnel: It struck us that the receptionist(s) were lacking the politeness one may expect, and their behavior only significantly improved when my husband spoke Dutch to them.
