What People are saying

Did I stay at the same hotel? Terrible!!

Blaqjaq84 on 18/11/2017 21:08

Checked into the Blackman Art Series around 5pm on Saturday, Was quite excited to stay here due to the excellent reviews but found my experience did not live up to them in any way.

Check In:

Check in experience was very poor, arrived out front of the hotel in the midst of some rough weather, to find there was ZERO undercover access to the hotel, the parking was also being consumed by taxi’s and waiting Uber’s, and as such I had to walk through what seemed like a river (24+ hours later and my shoes are still unwearable due to the amount of water I had to wade through), arrived inside the lobby struggling with 4 bags by myself and saturated by the rain, and nobody even offered to assist me, literally watched me struggle and carried on with whatever they were doing.

Got served by a European lady at the counter, she gave very cold service, not inviting at all and I felt like I was an inconvenience to her day (Maybe she was upset that I was dripping water on the floor?). I asked her if any available room upgrades were available to which she grunted and checked, advised I could upgrade to a “Junior Suite” (I had booked a Studio Room) at a cost of $60 per night, Sounded like good value so i asked her what the Junior Suite offered in addition to the Studio Room, after many minutes of her typing on the computer she told me she didn’t know that she “Guess it is bigger?”, I prompted her if the location was better and she said “Oh you can only have a city view” so I asked her what that meant and again got left with a lost look and a shrug of the shoulders.

Needless to say I decided to save the $60 and remain in the room as was booked.

The Room:

On arriving into the room i was met with a poor layout and paltry size. The room did have a balcony which was directly looking into a construction site so absolutely no privacy there, I could see the Eureka Tower if I look between the construction site and beyond in the distance (City View? Well technically I suppose) - Highly recommend they rename this room type to “Studio, Construction View”

The Balcony’s sliding door offered no fly screen or similar, so if one wanted to not have their room fill with mosquitos of an evening, they were unable to enjoy the fresh air. Same goes with the Awning Windows, no fly screens on them so one couldn’t have the window open, unsure why they even bother? Also, I believe very dangerous as you could open the window to create a 15-20cm gap with nothing between you and 11 floors underneath - I imagine some children could have a great time throwing things out the window.

The Bathroom was so small it could only be occupied by one person at once, the bathroom vanity was so short on space it was impossible to store any toiletries in the bathroom. The shower was a standard and very, very basic hand held shower rose, the water ran hot and cold during use, frequently changing and was unable to maintain a constant water pressure or temperature (It ranged between freezing cold and scalding hot depending on what was happening with the water pressure)

The included toiletries were very cheap and nasty, don’t expect quality so definitely BYO.

The bed was comfortable and would suit a solo traveller OK, my Studio Room only had a queen bed inside it (Even tho a King would’ve fitted), so sleeping with a partner wasn’t super comfortable. I should’ve checked when booking the room that it came with a King Bed, I wrongly assumed any quality hotel would come standard with a King Size bed in 2017.

The television in the room was located next to the bed, so the only way to watch TV from bed was to lay on your side or sit on the edge of the bed.

The glass shower door did not have sufficient clearance underneath it for a bath mat, so one could not have a bath mat within stepping distance of the shower. Led to very wet and slippery floors.

The Air conditioning didn’t automatically come on when in the room, after an hour of being in there I wondered why it was so stuffy to discover you had to manually turn it on (Inserting room key to turn the “room” on had no effect on the air con.

Hotel Amenities:

The lobby is small, nicely decorated but limited places to sit if waiting for somebody. Again, no undercover access to the hotel so if raining, be prepared for you and your luggage to get wet, while trying to not infringe on parking regulations.

The lifts are very slow, with 15+ levels to service, and every lift serving every level, if you’re on the higher floors be prepared for many stops on the way up and down. I felt like only 1 lift was working the time we were there as it was the only one which ever came for us.

I’m not sure if the hotel offered WIFI or what it’s speed would have been. I wasn’t advised on check in

I’m not sure if the hotel offers a pool or spa, nor a gym, again, wasn’t advised on check in.

The hotel does offer room service, tho at $13 for a Sausage Roll, I’m unsure if it represents very good value nor quality.

There was a positive to the stay, if staying on the weekend, there is free street parking up the road, so with a few minute walk you can save yourself the $25 daily rate.

All in All, Would I stay at the Blackman again? Nope.

Would I recommend you stay there? Nope. For the average daily rate, you could stay at Crown Metropol, Possibly Crown Towers, or one of the many inner city hotels in Melbourne that couldn’t possibly be any worse than this hotel, far better located and no doubt with staff who could actually work up the energy to smile and be able to explain the room amenities in detail.

Classy

A nice welcome.
This hotel is very classy. The rooms are modern and dressed with everything you need making your stay a lovely experience.
No pool, but if you can do without it I would highly recommend this hotel.
On the ground floor are two restaurants. One is French cuisine and the other Italian. Both are reasonably priced. The French restaurant serves a beautiful breakfast although this isn't included in the room price that I had.
Albert park is a 10 minute stroll away and this is perfect for the "post work" run or the couples retreat.
A cracker of a hotel !

Great location and friendly staff

We selected this location because it is close to family in Melbourne. It's a great hotel, the artwork just adds to the atmosphere. Location generally is fantastic with the tram just outside going to the city or St Kilda.

The convenience store across the street has most things you need to be sort of self sufficient, but no bottle shop near by. The kitchen facilities are very tiny and really consists of just one small pot and a fry pan, so don't think you can cook a proper meal.

The room is small, but adequate. We had no construction noise as we visited the weekend before Melbourne Cup and no one turned up for work on the Monday!

The Italian restaurant at reception is great, we ordered room service and the salads and pizza were really tasty, unfortunately they were fully booked up - on a Sunday! So book ahead.

There is also a great Sri Lankan restaurant, 5 minutes walk away, Cinnamon which was great value and very good, tasty food.

Overall we really liked the hotel and the location and will consider this as an alternative when we visit Melbourne next.

Loved it

Great spot in busy and hip location yet set on very green street. The hotel itself is very artsy and cool with bar/restaurant downstairs. A couple of new buildings are under construction near by but the noise is not that bad. I would definitely come back.

Great spot.

Hubby and I visit Melbourne every year and usually stay in the city but decided we wanted to stay somewhere different. Chose the Blackman because of other reviews and that it has a tram stop pretty much right outside. Front desk staff super friendly, requested a higher floor when booking as celebrating our anniversary. Corner room was on the 16th floor with amazing views of Albert park lake! Room was clean, well decorated and looked after we did notice once we settled into bed that we had about 5 moths hiding behind the curtains but we just coaxed them out the balcony door which wasn’t a big deal if it was cockroaches it would be another story! Hotel very clean and hubby appreciated the little gym they had. Great location, it was nice and quite when we stayed here maybe because of the higher floor. Good spot if you don’t want to stay in the CBD but still don’t want to be too far out of the city.
