I have booked this hotel for my parents who needed a short break. After reading those reviews, I wasn't too sure if I had made the best choice but thankfully, my parents have not been disappointed. Obviously, ever traveller has different expectations, but my parents just loved it. My mother always wanted to sleep in a castle and it was great.

First of all, the staff and the service was fantastic. They felt very welcomed and enjoyed talking to the people there. Also, the details in the interieur was much appreciated. The matress in the rooms itself was super comfortable and in the hot summer months, the cool rooms were a saint. They did not mind to the standard rooms at all because if they wanted a nice view, they simply enjoyed it during breakfast and during the day they have been out hiking anyway.

The only thing which could improve a little would be the variation of the dinner choice. But it was absolutley no show-stopper.

My parents will definitely go again and recommend it to travellers who appreciate the castle atmosphere and might not be "too picky" if not everything is brand new. I, for myself, cannot wait to go there myself after what I have heard.

Living in history

Spent two nights at this hotel converted from an ancient castle. Some people may not like how the conversion was done, but to me I love the fact that the castle was not totally modernised but retains some of its ancient features. I had a great time wandering around and soaking in the history of the castle. Lovely rooms with well equipped bathrooms, very nice bar and restaurant.

We have spent 2 great nights at the Artis Hotel Schloss Krumbach. The staff was very helpful while organising breakfast for my special dietary requirements. Definitely a great place a to organise your wedding and get your family and friends to stay over night. The surroundings are magical, as the whole "Buckelige Welt". We were at first put off by reading the previous reviews for this hotel but luckily we have stayed there and it was the best we could have done. Sometimes the reviews might sound really negative and you drop your expectations and are nicely surprised as we were. Hopefully we will be able to come back one day and be able to enjoy the time at the hotel again.

If you are touring Northern Austria and fancy a few nights in a castle this is one of the places to go. The castle is situated on top of a hill in the 'Bucklige Welt' region where you get a wonderful panorama view of the area. The rooms are modern with all facilities and large bathrooms. The dining room, bar and lounges are decorated with historical ambience. The dining room which was recently revamped has been furnished with lots of taste and you have a wonderful view from the panoramic windows. We stayed on half board basis, no complaints about breakfast but the evening buffet was rather limited and didn't warrant 4 star.
The castle also has a small wellness area with sauna and steam bath and one floor below that indoor swimming pool with lounges. Unfortunately it is rather dark in the pool area and as there are only small windows has a bit of a musty smell. But, all said and done you are staying in a 800-year old castle and they are trying to offer you all the facilities of a modern hotel.
All the staff are very friendly and the service is very good.
We were taken on a tour of the castle which was very interesting and also visited the old dungeons which have been converted into a vinothek and were told the story of the castle ghosts. So if you are in the area I would recommend a stay and who knows you might even see one !

Nice hotel, but understaffed and uninspired

This hotel has not been reviewed on here before in English so I thought I would be the first one to do so.

I have just returned from a “Christmas in an Austrian Castle Break” with page and My who used this castle as the base of the holiday. We had issues with the break itself, but I shall confine this review to the hotel. If you want to know about the Page and Moy experience, please contact me.

The hotel is an 800 year old Austrian Castle on a hill above the village of Krumbach. It is 2,100 feet above seal level. (For metres do the maths). It is reached by a very narrow, switchback road which winds its way up from the village and has very steep drops and 180 degree bends. The coach was unable to make the last bend and ended up pulling into the little coach park which is off the last bend and then reversing up to the castle entrance. Scary stuff, made even scarier by the fact that when we arrived there was thick snow and they had not cleared the road. You have to walk the last 100 years or so to the castle entrance and it is quite steep so worth considering if you are frail or in a wheel chair etc. As it is an old castle, the outside does look a bit run down when you first approach it. Inside it is very tidy and well decorated.

Check in was very swift. However I had paid a single supplement and requested a double room as I am very tall. However I was put in to a single room with a small cot like bed. I went back to Reception and with the help of the Page and Moy tour manager go moved to the room that had been reserved for our coach driver. Interestingly they had given him the double room, even though he was not staying every night.

The hotel itself has been sympathetically converted into a hotel whilst retaining many of the original features of the castle. As it built into the side of the hill, the floors can be a bit bewildering at first. You enter on level 0 which is half way up the top of the hill. This has Reception, a lobby area with chairs and tables, the bar, the restaurant and the kitchens. When you walk into the restaurant and look out, you are now three storeys up!

You go up the main stair case (quite steep and twisty) to Level 1. This has conference rooms and staff accommodation. Up the stair case again to Levels 2 and 3 which has hotel rooms and is where our party was staying. There is a lift from Reception to Levels 2 and 3, but it does not stop at Level 1.

Going down the main stair case from Level 0, you cross over an indoor bridge to the new wing which is built outside and abutting the castle wall. You go down stairs to two more levels containing hotel rooms. I think these were of a higher quality had the ones we had. These floors can also be reached by going over another indoor bridge from Reception and down some stairs. There is a maze of corridors and stairs down here, but there are signs on the walls to indicate where things are

At the bottom of the castle, accessible from the various staircases, is the indoor swimming pool. This has changing rooms with lockers, showers with soap, and loungers. Small tools are left at the side of the pool on a shelf. You can get bathrobes (called bath coats) from Reception. If you go down the main stairs you can get to the pool without going through Reception. There is a also a table tennis room. The pool was warm and just deep and long enough to have a reasonable swim. There was a built in Jacuzzi at one end but this never seemed to work. We also had a fuse go one morning when we were swimming. This took all the lights out. We were swimming in just the light from the small windows for about 20 minutes until they fixed it.

Down some more stairs is the fitness room, and a wet room area containing sauna, steam room, plunge pool and wet room. There are more showers here.

My room on the third floor was quite spacious. It had two single beds side by side, but with a gap between the inset mattresses. Each bed had a double duvet folded in half and one pillow. More pillows were available from Reception.

The room had a large wardrobe with hanging space on one side and shelves on the other. There was a large void under the shelves in the wardrobe where they could have put more shelves. There were also bedside drawers and a box to stand shoes in with a suitcase rest on top.

A flat screen TV with German and Austrian TV and radio stations, and CNN and Eurosport in English, stood on top of the mini bar. Note the biscuits and peanuts on top of the mini bar are NOT complimentary and have to be paid for.

The room is quite dimly lit, but the large standard lamp has a long lead and can be moved around the room. There are European standard plugs in the room, but they are hidden behind the bedside tables and the mini bar and you have to move these to get at them. There is one halfway up the wall that separates the room from the bathroom, but using this means leaving tings on the floor where you walk on them or trip over them.

The bathroom is brightly lit and spacious. Mine had a shower cubicle, toilet and sink. Others had baths with showers and curtains. It had the usual hairdryer which you can drop in the sink, but the light switch was outside so they are learning. They provided hand soap and shower soap via dispensers.

The fan in the bathroom was concealed in the wall and appeared to be shared with the room next door. Unusually it did not come on with the light. Instead, it would come on at about 0630, run for about three hours (very noisily) and then come on at random intervals during the day. Also some guests reported brown water coming out of their bath taps, but not the shower or sink. This was reported, but not resolved. Other room faults were responded to quickly though.

The heating in the room was by radiator, could be controlled and was very good. There was also a radiator in the bathroom which could be controlled and was below the towel rail.

We were on a package at Christmas which led to the hotel being run by a skeleton staff and the food being bland and repetitive apart from a couple of nights when they did put on a decent spread (after some complaints.) The staff did their best, but were reactive rather than proactive. Reception was not always staffed, but staff could be reached by phone.

In conclusion, this would be a good hotel to be in on a bed and breakfast basis as a base to explore the region by car, but I would not recommend going here on a coach break, especially at Christmas.
