What People are saying

Great place

Berna S on 07/11/2017 21:13

All acess was made by card, and the kitchen was quite big.
There were people coming in and out at all hours in my room, witch made it hard to sleep, but overall, very good place, security and vibe.

I'll choose Avalon house again, for sure.

Would not stay here again.

This is not a place for 60+ year-olds to stay. If you are in your 20's you will do well here. Lots of noise all night long from other hostelers coming home drunk (it is a 24/7 hostel). The bathrooms are co-ed on some floors as are the showers, did not bother me too much, they were cleaned on schedule. The bunk-bed in our room was sooooooo squeaky! Every movement woke the other person. We did not use the kitchen facility but it looked well stocked and others were using it. Breakfast was great--basic cereal/yogurt and toast with real butter, jams, and hot water for coffee or tea. There is no smoking in the Hostel but going in and out of the front door you will smell like you have been smoking yourself. The managers of the Hostel need to get the people who smoke to move away from the only entrance in. Picture on website is mis-leading, it is a picture of the Starbucks right by the Hostel. The Hostel was not worth the price we paid for it.

Reception is a bit slow, but ok hostel nonetheless

The hostel itself is ok. The breakfast is adequate. There's an area for guests and the rooms and the toilets are ok too, but I think overall it looks drab. It's in dire need of a makeover. Some of the photos of the hostel are misleading, because the interior is not bright. They really need a new elevator. It's the slowest elevator I've been on so far, how long have they had it?
In most hostels I've been in so far, I've never had a problem with the speed of reception. I find with this hostel I have to be patient with reception. Sometimes, there's only one or two people at the counter, which isn't enough when there's crowds of people checking in. Today, I had a bugbear. I rented a locker and I paid a ten euro deposit. When I was handing back the keys today, I was in a hurry because I needed to catch a bus and I had a long way to walk to the bus stop. I needed to bring back the key immediately. When I came to the hostel, I found two receptionists at the counter. One was chatting away with a group of tourists, the other was chatting away with another guest in Spanish and there were other people including myself waiting. When the woman finished speaking Spanish to the guest, I said, "Sorry could I just hand my key back?" She ignored me and said "Who's next in the queue?" Now I could understand there were other people waiting who had been there before me, but then again, I didn't need to chat with her, I just wanted to hand back my key and get my deposit back. It would've only taken her 3-4 minutes to do that. Being desperate, I then interrupted again, "Sorry, I really need to hand back my key as I'm in a hurry." I put the key back down at the desk. The woman continued to look at her computer, shake her head and ignore me. I never got my deposit back and I don't think that was fair. So I just think there should be more people at reception because it's not fair on some people who are waiting and are in a hurry. I see crowds of backpackers and students at reception at the hostel all the time and reception are usually very slow in dealing with them. It's about time that should change and that they should get a new elevator.

Fire alarm sounded three times

Juan C on 08/10/2017 07:56

I higly advised against this hostel.

We stayed at this hostel two nights.
The first night, the fire alarm started ringing at 7.30 am. The people in reception told us that the problem was some steam from the showers.

The second night the same problem happened. The fire alarm started at around 5.30am. It was muted but the fire alarm in the nearby starbucks continued ringing. Around 15 minutes later it started again.

Of course, this didnt allow us to sleep well and we left the hostel earlier than expected.

Im not sure how often this happens, but our experience in this hostel is really bad. We have slept here twice and the alarm sounded three times.

Typical Youth Hostel

Franziska Johan... S on 04/10/2017 16:11

Me and my friend stayed at the Hostel for 1 week and booked a 2-bed private room. The rooms are clean and there is everything you need: towels, duvets and hot water. The nights are loud, but what else do you except for a youth hostel ;)...but you can get free earplugs at the reception - yeah!
The breakfast is very basic - the location is really good! You can reach the most important spots by feet!
