Lovely Stay

aemaloneon 11/06/2016 04:38

We're glad to have found this place! We stayed three nights kicking off our Ecuador vacation. We arrived quite late but Fernando was waiting for us and saw us to our room.

As so many others have mentioned Gerrit did sit with us at breakfast in the mornings to discuss the days plans. He assisted us with dinner recommendations, suggested a place to do some easy hiking for our first day, arranged a morning trip to Papallacta with Fernando for the second day and a transfer service to Otavalo on our way out. On our last evening he helped us order pizza so we could have a relaxing evening in. His assistance in making these arrangements helped make the beginning of our trip flow so much smoother. Silvia (forgive me if I've messed up her name) cooked and prepared a beautiful breakfast each morning. The fresh juice and eggs were wonderful and helped start our days on the right foot.

The room was quite comfortable. We stayed in the second guesthouse. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The grounds are fantastic, with lovely flowers, fruit trees, and even a playground and treehouse that our four year old enjoyed greatly.

During our stay I celebrated my birthday and Gerrit and his daughter Amanda went out of their way to sing happy birthday and have a small cake, complete with a candle, at breakfast. It was such a thoughtful and considerate thing to do. It is a sweet memory I won't soon forget.

There were no other guests during our stay until the day of our departure if I remember correctly. At times we felt a bit of a nuisance asking Gerrit for things we needed. For example, we asked to use the pool one evening but felt as though we put him out. The hot tub was not filled during our stay.

If you're interested in beautiful grounds, a nice place to relax, and/or something to keep children happy, I would recommend a stay here. Great memories!

A lovely place. Great to explore quito's surroundings

Gerrit, wife Patricia, daughter Amanda and the cat and dogs are wonderful! Very hospitable, very warm, and extremely helpful! The dogs are pretty and sooooo lovely (can we adopt?). Furthermore, the cottages (we had #2) are very nice with a fridge, microwave, desk a good shower and enough space. They are set in a beautiful garden with a very nice pool (according to Amanda a lovely 31 degrees celcius), a sauna and lovely flowers. The breakfast in the beautifully, self-designed house is wholesome and tasteful. And, a wonderful opportunity to spendvtime with the family if you like. We felt really a part of it. Lastly, the location; it will definitely save you time to explore the surroundings of quito (like otavalo) and the airport from this place, rather than from central Quito. Hence, great place to do things outside of quito.

All good? Yes! But, a few things to also consider...

It is a 'rural' area. This means that there are dogs in the vincinity and also roosters...do i need to explain further, or is the need for earplugs sufficiently clear? Also, in weekends (we were here in the weekend before x-mas), the people here like to party. On friday we went to bed at around midnight hearing karaoke by the notsotalentedsingers from tumbaco, and we woke up at 7am, to still hear those same people. Similar on saturday. You gotto admit their stamina (or alcohol intake). Furthermore, you do need a taxi for everything (lunch, dinner etc). Not a big deal, but it is a given. Also, make sure you know this address and the way back as cab drivers have a hard time finding this place, so you often end up guiding them. One last (minor) item is that one of the nights our bathroom was home to quite a few potato bugs (pissebedden); no idea where they came from, and we havent seen them since. Since they are harmless it wasnt a big deal, but it was something i did not expect here.

All in all, a lovely stay and certainly recommended! I just hoped that outside of quito, the noise pollution would be less at night...but nothing a few earplugs and a few drinks cant solve. I would come back here!

Carefree !!!! Beautiful

We stayed here for our last two nights of travel in the cozy private cottage.
Gerrit was awesome ,he sat briefly with us after breakfast each morning To help us plan our day , he was so wonderful at setting up everything we needed from the cab driver to pick us up and drop us off for a hike to going out for dinner, and in to the plaza to getting us to and from the airport. It was so care free , we could just relax and enjoy. We also took time to just relax and sit by the pool and do nothing, in the private beautiful yard. The neighbourhood is quite and safe. The breakfast is lovely :)

Old style individual service

From mid-June to July 11 this year my wife Shelley and I spent 23 days in Ecuador and had an amazing time. Having formerly spent “hard time” in South America, Ecuador was a truly a delightful and surprising destination. Ecuador has a travel promo which reads “We have mountains, we have beaches, we have Amazon, we have it all, All you need is Ecuador”
My reply to that is, believe it!
At the end of our trip we spent five nights at B&B Tumbaco which is in a broad valley conveniently located almost equidistant between Quito and the airport - 15km to Quito and 18 km to the airport. We chose this location to wind down and visit destinations in the hinterland of the Quito region and at the same time avoid the difficult traffic conditions of the Quito metropolis.
Our host Gerrit was a perfect gentleman. Honestly, it was like staying with family or friends, nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in one of three cottages at the bottom of the spacious grounds. Ours was self-contained, which allowed us to do some cooking, a pleasant change from weeks of restaurant meals. The Spanish mansion and three cottages are all in Spanish colonial style construction with well laid out gardens and a swimming pool. Breakfast each morning was in the spacious kitchen of Gerrit and Sonia’s house.
Gerrit used his knowledge and contacts to organise day trips to Cotopaxi and Otovalo and an overnight stay at Mindo in the cloud forest. The driver, Alex was an expatriate also, with 23 years residence in Ecuador, a good guy, fluent English and an expert driver.
Earlier in the trip on a one night stay between the Amazon and flying to the Galapagos Gerrit had even made enquiries to our flight and had a taxi driver he uses, Fernando, awaiting us on our arrival, a very pleasant surprise. This same driver is also available for any transfers or visits to Quito or the international restaurant precinct at the adjacent centre of Cumbayo.
For breaks like ours or short stays with speedy access to the airport we absolutely recommend B&B Tumbaco.

So glad we went with Tumbaco based on reviews!

It's a little far from the city (about 30 mins by cab which is cheap) but it is closer to the airport so we saved in cab money that way. For us it was worth it because we needed quiet after having had such a busy few weeks and were always go go. This was like a little retreat. We stayed at the tiny (I think yellow) casita which was PERFECT for us. So clean, charming and quiet. It's such a beautiful property so well kept and welcoming. Breakfast was delicious.
