I don’t know that I would call the hotel ‘grand’ but it was certainly fine for a night passing through. The staff were very friendly and the rooms were clean. A bargain at $60NZD. The Thai restaurant downstairs was pretty good too.

Old drab and rude staff this place is racist and makes white people feel un welcome.

Wanted last minute accommodation on a shoestring budget as I was working up there and my accommodation fell through. The Night manager was very helpful and also my vehicle was locked away in a secure area. The room was neat and tidy and clean so I was happy with that.

Cheap enough to stay and it was obviously grand a few years back.
Clean and convenient located next to bus terminal.
Hot showers and secure.
Surrounding area is OK, maybe a little run down.
10mins to the town basin.
Otherwise very little to do in Whangarei but decent enough place to Base yourself out of of you have a car.

We stayed for one night only, chose the Grand simply because the Queen stayed there back in the '1950s', I can definitely see that it would've been quite 'grand' back then, the stairs were just lovely. We had the balcony room, it was clean, dated but adequate and overpriced a wee bit. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would stay again, but probably cheaper room.
