    Poor food

After reading the menu in the lobby I thought roast rib of beef sounded lovely. How wrong I was, this has got to be the worst roast I have ever had. £10.50 for what was a microwave box roast with a rubbery Yorkshire pudding. Staff very uninterested even when the restaurant was almost empty. The room was clean and tidy but cold. I had to turn all the radiators on and wait for the air to bleed through. Breakfast was better but fried eggs burnt. Clearly no proper chef here!!! Book a room but eat dinner elsewhere😡

Gave it a 1 as they were so rude

Firstly we had trouble locating this hotel. Phoned for help and the lady at reception was so impatient and arrogant we had regretted paying on booking. On arrival we waited for almost half an hour as she was busy, others were also waiting. No aircon, stifling night, if you opened the window the traffic was so noisy you could not sleep. Rooms need a revamp, all very tired.

    Overnight stay

We picked this hotel as all the others near here were fully booked. And our luck was in!
The hotel approach is very clean and the gardens are well kept. The reception was clean and tidy, and welcoming. The reception staf were very pleasant and helpful.
Our room, 50, was very comfortable, clean and the bathroom was spotless. The bed was firm but not hard and we had a very good nights sleep. This depsite the fact that there was a road outside we heard no noise.
The restaurant food was excellent. Service from the waitress was very good and helpful. My wife had the steak, and I had the steak and guiness pie. Both were as good as you can get. To my shame I could not finish the pie as there was so much steak!
Breakfast was very good, both the cold selection of cereals and fruit, and the hot food was very tasty. Our eggs were cooked to order.
If you stayed in one of the other local hotels, well you missed out on a very good pleasant hotel

    Avoid like the plague

If you want a spacious, well appointed room, comfortable bed, great night’s sleep, clean, tidy, practical bathroom and pleasant surroundings, DON’T BOOK INTO THE CALCOT HOTEL, READING.
This was one of the most appalling beds we’ve ever had the misfortune to sleep in; hard as concrete, on a 30 degree slope and the smallest double you could possibly get. I even tried to top and tail at one point during the night, in order to avoid the 30 degree slope, but this too proved fruitless.
The bathroom was so small, you have to wend your way round the door in order to be able to get to the toilet. The tile grout is covered in mould, as are the corners of the tiny window recess (in order to open this you have to stand in the bath), and the floor around the toilet is dirty and suspiciously sticky. There is absolutely no air flow through the bathroom, despite an extremely noisy extractor fan, and the whole of the bathroom is consequently soaking wet after a shower, with a permanently misted up mirror.
The food in the restaurant is average at best, but with well above average prices, and the bar area is cold, with a large TV blaring in a corner.
Suffice it to say, we won’t be returning and it was a toss up to decide which I would do first.....leave a review or visit the chiropractor.
