Convenient place to stay in Normandy

On recommendation of a friend we chose the Best Western Le Dauphin and were glad we did (have found the Best Western hotels in Europe foolproof choices - compared with this chain's hotels in the U.S.). After an initial little bit of language struggle with a nice young man at the reception things went well throughout our 3 day stay. Enjoyed our room and breakfast and the location. Short, easy walks to the center of town and the bus stop to the Pegasus Bridge Memorial and later to the ferry to England. From Caen we took a privately-guided tour to the Normandy Beaches etc..
Good atmosphere and exellent service

I wantet to use Caen as base for my exploration by bicycle of the D-day beaches, and I was lucky when I chose this hotel. The hotel certainy lived up to my expectations of a four star hotel, and the atmosphere and service providet by the staff made me feel comfortable and well taken care of.
Central location

We stayed in Caen for 4 nights to discover the surrounding Normandy towns & WWII landings & also spend a day around the city. The Best Western Le Dauphin Hotel is fairly central with a short stroll to either the Place Saint-Sauveur or the Quai in the other direction.
In regards to parking at the hotel, it's on a first come first served basis and if you are lucky enough to get a space, it's not that easy to park if you have a large car, the spaces are tight and not very much room to manoeuvre. But it is free of charge.
The room was a reasonable size & well maintained, however, the room didn't have aircon, Opening the window meant we were overlooked. During our stay the temperatures were around 30C/85F - No fan provided.
The receptionist on check in wasn't very helpful at all, unable to help store our luggage whilst we parked the car off-site, or help locate a reasonable, secure, carpark. A different receptionist on check out was very friendly & helpful.
We didn't try the breakfast, we generally prefer a local café.
Worth noting the free Wifi was good.
All in all it's in a central location, not too sure if I would stay here again.
Disappointing

We have stayed here many times in the past and it was one of our favourite hotels. Perhaps we hit a bad day. The receptionist was business like but sour. The evening menu was disappointing so we ate in town. Our room, where we have been in the past, at the back of the annexe was clean and comfortable, but the shower, over the bath was only at chest height. (I think we noticed that before.) The neighbours outside were from Hell. Noisy music and laughter till about midnight w9wi think they went to a club then) and again from about three till nearly five, Then - disaster- we went to breakfast at 8.15 , which has always been superb in the past. I think there must have been a coach party Only one table was cleared and many dishes and juices were empty. Only one man was on duty - I guess they were short staffed- and food was eventually replaced. So sad. We will not stay here again.
We never got there but the service was great

This is an odd review - we never got to the hotel although we had spent a long time preparing the trip for more than 30 people.
We chose the hotel originally because of its location and, from past experience we like Best Western for groups, not least because they are so well maintained.
So my review is of the booking process. Most of our contact was with Vincenzo on reception. We had quite a complicated set of requests with a large group for several days. Sadly, with some time to go, illness meant that too many dropped out so we had to cancel.
Vincenzo could not have been more helpful; he responded to every request promptly, his emails were clear and detailed and not bogged down in cut-and-paste contracts 20 pages long (as often happens). He sought out the rooms that would best suit our group. He was engaging on the phone and a great ambassador for the brand. And he was impassably courteous when we had the disappointment of cancelling.
We shall return but, in the vein of many reviewers who write to complain about restaurants that they never got into, I wish to thank Best Western Le Dauphin for their efficiency, consideration and courtesy in handling a trip we have had to postpone. We shall definitely go there one day soon.
