It worth a detour from the main road to see the "boca" roars. It's ~5km from the road, in a non pavemented road, but with good conditions

The road is signposted just past the big petrol on the Samana-Galeras road. It veers off to the right and is basically a badly maintained lane. My quad ran out of fuel a couple of miles before the turn. So independent renters beware, they rent out on empty and this is where my experience with robbers starts because I stopped a couple of motorbikes to help me. One demanded twenty dollars to get a bottle of petrol and the other eighteen. I had no choice but to pay but it left a bad taste with regard to local hospitality but it was my own fault for not checking it out. The road follows an stunning line of limestone cliffs which are quite dramatic with caves and hanging creepers and surrounded by jungle. The land here is very lush and if you are into birds I saw many but have no idea what they were apart from the vultures. You go past an old mine and there were about ten guys with machetes chopping down the vegetation that was hanging over the road. They did look a bit dodgy and there were what could be guards sitting in a car watching them. So maybe they were on a prison work detail. After about half an hour you will find the blowhole where there is a little shack and a short, sharp walk will bring you there but it was not blowholing day today, never mind. I would say that this excursion is worth it for the dramatic cliffs and stunning mountain scenery. I can't comment on the safety angle. I was alone on a quad bike and had no problems, but because of other reviews it maybe better to go in a group. It is a remote and lonely road.

Our motoconcho driver brought us to this place and we had so much fun here. You never really know when its happening. If you get a little closer you shirt will blow up. We had a lot of fun here and enjoyed out time at this place

Such a shame to have to report negatively on a place that is such a beautiful drive and awesome location. Between the drive alongside the cliffs, the marble mine, caves and the boca del diablo it really is an amazing place.

That being said, and I hate to put a stain on the local economy and many good people that do live and work there, but it is not currently a place you should go visit.

The road is a one-way road going in and some friends of mine went on an ATV tour there and were met by a group of 3 masked men with machetes waiting for them when they returned from Boca Del Diablo. They had knocked a tree down in the middle of the road and robbed them of many precious belongings.

It's such a bummer that such cowards are hurting the tourism and local economy there, the reasoning behind my 5 star rating is that I hope that eventually the police can get involved and make the area a safe place to visit for everyone. But for now I would advise avoiding this place altogether unless you are armed with a firearm and traveling in a closed vehicle. Otherwise you should stay away for now.

My boyfriend and I travelled by scooter to see Boca del Diablo in December 2015. We made our way back after seeing the site and buying some souvenirs from the lady, close to half way we were stopped by two machete bearing men wearing t-shirts over their heads to hide. They robbed us of many of our belongings and money. It was a very scary event and I feel lucky to have only lost a few belongings. I would not recommend to anyone to travel by scooter, and to be honest, I would actually avoid this trip altogether after all the incidents I have read about.
