What People are saying

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place!

Waystation_49 on 06/11/2017 07:12

Canoga Hotel
7126 De Soto Ave
Los Angeles, CA 91303-2208

Stay: On and off: Late summer through early fall 2017

If I could “dream” of the perfect boutique hotel, Canoga Hotel would be it! Let me see if I can give you a tour of the place. PLEASE save me a room - I would move in here tomorrow and just “retire” if I could slow down my life.

Location

Half block south of Sherman Way, the main artery through Canoga Park, CA (East/ West). It is next to Motel 6.

It is next door to Crab Planet, of you like Thai Food. You could also get your car washed (mobile car wash person can come by, or oil changed at Jiffy Lube at the corner of Sherman Way and DeSoto. Also on that corner on the southwest side are a large shoe store and a Dollar Store. You are walking distance to the DMV on Sherman Way, and one long drive-able block south to McDonalds, two long drive-able blocks north to Wendy’s and Taco Bell, or Carl’s Jr. (all on DeSoto) or go east a few blocks if you want El Pollo Loco.

Need to do laundry? Canoga Hotel has an agreement with Motel 6 for use of its machines. OR - go south on De Soto and opposite McDonalds is a Lavanderia (Laundry).

Grub Hub, and other food delivery service this hotel - but order early as delivery ends by 10pm.

Room Chosen

I tried the standard room and the disability room. I like the disability room for reasons you will soon see.

Staff - Perfect!

Neil manages the place for a corporate office. Then there is KC and Ricky who also work the front desk. This team is so kind….humble. I can only say the nicest things about all of them, as well as housekeeping and maintenance. Everyone works well as a team and really is committed to keeping customers happy.

Property

Parking

If you have a handicap tag, and park in disability parking, the roll for your luggage is a straight -shot into your room, no curb! You park about four feet from your door. Do you know how much time that saves?! (Free parking)

The Room Door

Once inside your disability suite, look at the door if you get one of “those” rooms. There are TWO peepholes! One for adults and one for children. Who thinks of ‘that’? So smart! Reality is that sometimes parents do leave a kid in a room, so the parent can run over to the office. What a brilliant decision to do this. I have never seen this done anywhere except here!

Gone is the loop -type security lock and instead is a super strong steel (?) type square that flips back over the door to secure it as an extra deadbolt.

Armoire and Closet

For clothing, you have the option of a tall armoire in the disability room, or a full-length (!) closet in the other rooms with couches. This is more like what you would find at a long-term stay suite.

Bathroom

If you have the armoire, you have a HUGE bathroom, with a walk in shower. If you opt for the room with the couch, then you have a traditional shower stall with a rain type showerhead in the ceiling or traditional showerhead in the wall. You can adjust all the showerheads. There are ample hooks in the disability bathroom as well as a decent shelf.

The bathroom door in the disability suite is opaque. Let’s in the light without exposing yourself. Nice!

The frame on the mirror is modern and pretty - graphic type design.

The shower is interesting - once you figure out that you slide the lever at the bottom to decide which shower head you want to use, and the top one determines the temperature, the shower can begin. I like the disability shower better because it has grab bars around the sides and for me; I find the tile floor a little slick for my liking. The disability shower is huge and also has a full-sized bench.

If you are traveling with a service animal and have a large kennel, you will have room to set it up in the bathroom.

The Room

Each room has a microwave and a larger size bar fridge. No freezer. Remember this in case you want to bring in ice cream. It will not keep ice cream. I learned the hard way on a 109-degree day. Otherwise, that fridge holds a lot. You also have a separate individual use coffee maker. (Room also has an ironing board, iron, and hair dryer).

Then you get to make a choice: You can use the built in desk as a 5-1/2 foot desk with either a marble top or really good fake marble (it’s pretty), to do work or use it to prepare food. I did both. The first time I brought in my folding table and put it next to the bed against the wall and set up office space. Second time I used the desk as a desk.

TV

Locals are catching on they can rent a room just to watch the game. How many hotels do you know of that put in 55” TVs? These sets are awesome and you can get a cable from the front desk to turn the TV into a monitor for your laptop!

Full range of channels - alas, no channel list in the room :-(

Dresser

Underneath the TV is a two person double dresser with very deep drawers - I used half for office gear.

Nightstands

The bed is flanked by two built in nightstands where you can choose where you can choose which side of the bed you want to charge your phone. The room lighting is on rheostats - and all recessed. Wow, is this NICE!

Carpet

I love this carpet - it sort of looks like indoor-outdoor carpet but this is really clean and a pleasure to walk on as the padding is very good. It’s also pretty with an unusual pattern to it.

THE BEST BED - EVER!

I have a new “favorite bed.” All I had to do is sit on the edge of this bed and I could feel stress just draining out of me. Initially, I thought for sure it was a waterbed, but just no heater. Then, I thought - “Is it an airbed?” No - seems not to be that, either. “Is it a gel bed?” I still don’t know. But, best sleep EVER. Yes, even better than my other two favorite beds: Hampton and Marriott. Neither of those bed measure up after experiencing this bed. I can tell you my back never felt better!

This place is big on clean and protecting you! The mattresses and pillows are all zipped into bug-free casings so you cannot tell what brand you are sleeping on. The pillows are really nice as well.

Overall Cleanliness of Property - THE BEST!

The management and support staff are constantly WASHING the tar parking lot and sidewalks. I’ve never seen such extreme commitment to a place being kept hospital level (?) immaculately clean.

Even the housekeeping staff - the hotel gives maid the proper time to really clean, and not just do a once-over. You will really get a clean room! The only downside I caught was once or twice the maid would clean the toilet then wipe down the seat. I carry Lysol disinfectant wipes with me, so I just re-washed the seat and wiped it down. But otherwise, the maids are so careful to clean really well.

Downside

Two story property and no elevator to the second level.

Breakfast - the juice seems to be thinner than higher end hotels. I did not try the waffle maker. I had cereal. I had a couple of the bear claws, which are packed in plastic wrap, over the time I was there. Coffee is stronger and I think better in the rooms, than at breakfast. Breakfast room is very small.

I don’t know how many people really eat there. The hotel might do better making it a gift shop (?)

Only other thing, if I owned the place, the area has changed a lot over time…hotels have to keep pricing elevated to keep the “wrong element” out. I think the time has come to “replace and transplant” the two topiary type plants in front of the hotel as they send a shall we say, “conflicting” message? Maybe put in palm bushes since the logo is of palm trees.

Other than these few picky points, I can tell you I have reviewed hundreds of hotels since starting doing reviews in 1998. Canoga Hotel is by far my favorite of all the hotels where I have ever stayed. They just seem to have thought of everything and installed it. Even the color scheme is fun, happy, and orange with silver tinted driftwood furniture. If I could re-create this place as a permanent living space - or something very similar with the lighting, built-ins, state-of-the-art high tech features and parking situation, I would. This place is near perfect.

I offered to help them fill it with long-term stay type people who would treat this place with the respect as a home.

PLEASE save me “my” room (  ) - this is my happy place to stay. You may always hear the expression that it is all about the location. In this case, it is the hotel and staff that sells this - location is a neutral. It’s about a ten-minute drive from the freeway (101) and about a fifteen-minute drive from the 118. Thus, the location is not its strongest feature. It’s “good enough.” It’s the hotel and staff that makes this place a strong winner. 5’s are not high enough. This place breaks the rating scale - I look forward to featuring this hotel in articles / books I write. Their commitment to customer service and serving guests is very strong.

Renovation improvements working

Onrown on 16/10/2017 06:40

I was skeptical when I booked two rooms. But the hotel was as described online and the pics were accurate. They have done a great job renovating the rooms and we liked it a lot. Very clean and stylish. The walk outside of the rooms on the first level had been redone and it is hoped that they can resurface the second level. The only issue we had was with the air conditioner. It cooled very well. However, for the few minutes that the compressor would come on, it was noisy. The rest of the time the unit was quiet. I told the management and they explained that they were ordering air units a few rooms at a time. Parking passes are given for safe parking in the center of the complex. They are doing a wonderful job with this property and it just takes time.

Terrible experience

1. Deposit has never refunded if you do not take care of bill for your credit card. Do not forget to check it.

2. Noisy during night. Someone is coming to hotel parking by noisy custom car with big volume music almost everynight.

3. Manager came to my room for placing house phone even I was working in my room. He asked me to step in to room many times even I said "No, please do it after check-out."

4. Air conditioner is very noisy. It need to be replaced.

Basic, clean hotel

Laura O on 22/08/2017 14:07

We stayed for 4 nights in this hotel to explore Los Angeles. For your idea: it is 30 minutes drive to Santa Monica beach from the hotel, what is nice. For us it was a good, basic spot to explore LA from. The room was pretty big and has enough storage space. The neighbourhood was nice, everything you needed was there.
