What People are saying

Lovely setting but very poor value for money.

Garth H on 01/01/2017 20:02

I am certain that the owners of this hotel are far away. So many things that would make it a more pleasant place to stay, and would cost very little, are neglected and run down. AC did not work. The door to our room would not close unless locked, meaning that to leave a sleeping spouse or child in the room required leaving the door swinging open and shut with the breeze. The 'demi-pension' allowed for no choice whatsoever, and the food was notably inferior to that ordered a la carte (for less cost!). Mattresses were ancient, with springs sticking out. Pillows were comically poor quality. This was not only in our room, but in those of others in our large party. The setting is nice and the pool was clean, but the hotel could be made so much better with minimal effort/investment, so either ownership is unaware or doesn't care about the comfort and satisfaction of guests. Will not be going back.

Beautiful Sunsets and a Great Deal of Sand

ono2009 on 12/12/2016 10:19

The hotel is a nice casual hotel. Rooms offer the basics; bed with mosquito netting, bathroom with shower, air conditioning. It is set right off the beach and they also have an outdoor pool. The hotel is accessible from the town via a dirt road. So you need a good car. The food was OK. The rooms are set in the sand, so be prepared for sand in your room and everywhere. No playground for children.

Very pleasant place but a log way out of town

A pleasant hotel. The rooms are good, of a decent size and the beds have mosquito nets. The shower is extremely powerful but you have to waste a lot of water to get it hot.
No toiletries apart from cheap soap. There is a huge swimming pool which is rather chilly in November and the transition from shallow to deep is a bit dangerous. Breakfasts are minimal - the only fruit was oranges. The dinner menu is limited - the curry didn't seem to have met any spices in its preparation, and not cheap. Good cocktails. Only worth staying in if you have transport

Nice and clean place but no extra

Charles M on 13/03/2016 19:43

This is a cool place to stay because it's clean, the pool also, and you have the ocean just next.

But on the other hand, the mattresses are uncomfortable (made of foam). The soap/shampoo distributor in the shower was empty and not refilled and I forgot mine so I had to buy some.

The restaurant is ok and fast to serve for the country.

Breakfast is served from 7 to 10am, and is a buffet. You will find some croissants, bread, ham, cheese, hot beverages and some other stuff.

Be aware that you will need a taxi to get out of the place because it is far away from anything.

Good for relaxing, not so much for exploring Saint-Louis

Hotel Cap's location in the Hydrobase hotel area is not ideal for exploring the city of Saint-Louis. Hydrobase is on a very narrow peninsula, Langue de Barbarie. To reach the city one has to go through a crammed area of industrial scale fishing, fish handling and processing (interesting per se, though). Once past all the fish one comes to the Guet Ndar part of the city where the fishermen live. Although it is a neighbourhood worth exploring in all its colour and local feel, most tourists are more interested in the old town Saint-Louis. To get there you really need to take a taxi every time. However, if you are content to just spend, say, one day in the old part of town, the Hydrobase is a good location where one can have some quality pool time, walks on the beach and arrange trips to the closeby national parks.

Hydrobase has a small center with some small eateries for those tired of their hotel's menu as well as souvenir shops. Very few locals live in the area. Although the area has several hotels, it doesn't feel too touristy.

Most rooms are in cute little huts with comfortable beds, efficient air con and tacky decor. Some wear and tear in places but generally fine. Lights were awfully cold in colour, like in a hospital. The hand held shower head was a little bit of a nuisance. Mosquito nets are provided, I strongly recommend using them too.

The restaurant had some very good fish, the rest is not that great. Breakfast was pretty bad with absolutely nothing fresh. Just stale white bread, jam and some pastries. The hotel staff are very friendly and will attend to your needs swiftly.

The hotel and it's surrounding area are quiet and safe and perfect for families to let their children loose. I spent last days of my tour in northern Senegal here and this place was excellent for the weary traveler to rest and enjoy expensive gin and tonics by the pool side. Weary travelers and children alike will enjoy the phenomenon of ghost crabs coming up from their holes in the evening and for some reason dropping themselves in the pool (which is then cleaned by the staff during the night).
