If you want the real thing while your in Beijing then look no further than this Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant. Not expensive and the food was fantastic. The waiter was really helpful in that he took time to show us exactly how the thin wraps are supposed to be done and once shown it made it so easy to get it right. Its quite a noisy place but that just adds to the fun. They cater for just couples and large parties so what ever the size of your group make this place a tick on your list for one meal while in Beijing.

We have had Peking Duck in Qingdao, China. But there is just something about this being a must do for our first trip to Beijing.
My wife found this place. On our first attempt (at night), we were not successful. But on a different day, in the early afternoon - success.
When we entered, there were many, many 'to go' setups prepared and waiting to go out.
We felt fortunate to get a table quickly as the restaurant was full.
We ordered a duck (no half portions here) and enjoyed watching the cook carve it at our table. There MAY be a right way to make the pancake, but I did not care. I just enjoyed this treat.
After dinner, we spent some time watching the cook at work. The ducks are roasted in an oven heated by a wood fire.
By way of reference we paid 305 RMB for the dinner which included two 600 ml beers.

I went to that restaurant because it was the most famous and traditional, but the quality of the duck is far from the best that I had before (even in Brazil I had better ones), it's greasy. Also, the duck is stand alone, so you have to ask for complements that makes the lunch even more expensive.

Lonely Planet says that you cannot go to Beijing and not try the Beijing Roast Duck. We did it in the historical outlet of the Qianmen Quanjude and it was really really good. We went there in the afternoon to reserve a table for dinner (we did it because every time we walked there it was packed). We had the main dish of the restaurant (a full duck sliced by the cook in front of us and served in a fancy way) and it was delicious. One duck is enough for two persons.
The price is relatively high for Beijing standards, but in the end it totally worth.
They also accept international credit cards.

It is the most popular place for the roasted 'Peking duck'. There is a long queue all the time. So it is best to go ahead of time. The food is very good, but not out of the world. There are other branches of Quanjude which may be better. It is a good one-time experience, but not worth of the price and the reputation.
