What People are saying

Hotel was nice, but quite old. That didnt bother me as i didnt spend so much time in the room. Pub was nice and the food was good. Also breakfast was good and staff was nice. Location was nice, close to the high street. Also car parking was plus.

Restaurant service not good

jivebanana on 16/11/2017 17:03

Colleagues of mine were staying here and we decided to eat here as it was easy. The menu was not very exciting and the restaurant was not busy apart from one large party of about 18 people. We placed our orders and after a while we were told that a lot of our choices were not available. We all then opted for simple chicken Caesar salads. After some time the waitress returned to tell us that because of the big group of people we would have to wait until they had been served so there may be a delay. We SHOULD have read between the lines and taken the decision to go elsewhere but we didn't and carried on talking. It was only after we had been waiting for over 40 mins that we realised we should have gone to another restaurant but by then it was too late. Our salads arrived only after we had been waiting for ages. It was a salad! No culinary ability required and definitely not worth the wait. Needless to say we did not go back. It was evident that they did not have the staff to cope with even the minimal demand and although the waitress apologised this length of wait is unacceptable.

Lovely position for a short break!

We had to debate whether to go for the full five blobs or stick at four. Four and a half would have been about right. Half taken off for the traffic noise? Our room was at the front, facing onto the busy A4. Great to 'people watch' what's going on on the high street, not so clever when a lorry rumbles past at three in the morning. It was a lovely, comfortable, warm and well equipped 'superior' room and the double glazing certainly helped but the rooms at the back would be quieter. Other than that, there is little to criticise. Of course the decor and ambience is 'olde '. It's an olde hotel! But the staff are also 'olde' in the best possible way: olde worlde service, olde worlde helpfulness and olde worlde pleasantness. The food was first class but the service at the very busy breakfast time was a little too slow and ensured that the final half a blob came off our overall rating. But with good private parking and lovely dog friendliness it was still a close call!

Very nice stay, warm welcoming, great food but bed wasn't comfy

oldey2017 on 15/10/2017 18:12

Booked a superior room for a weekend away with my partner. Mop fair was on so the town centre was blocked off but the staff were very helpful giving us directions to open car parks close to the hotel in the weeks before our stay. Arrival went smoothly and was very nice. Flowers. Champagne and chocolates were ready on arrival that I'd booked before hand.

Room was clean and well presented but anybody over 6ft would struggle like myself due to the low ceilings and beams. Can't complain about that however because the character of the building was great. Only issue with our room was we both didn't have a very good nights sleep because the bed was sagging in the centre. May be worth flipping the mattress or replacing it. And on checkout we weren't asked if we had a good stay as there was a new person on the front desk who didn't seem as on it as the first younger guy. If we had been asked I would have mentioned there and then about the overall good stay but the bed had let it down slightly.

Breakfast was good but service was slightly on the slow side however can be forgiven as they were very busy as everyone who had stayed there seemed to turn up at the same time.

Overall it was a very good stay and we would consider booking in there again should we be heading to Marlborough.

Room number 29

Disappointed

Have stayed here several times before and previously enjoyed it. Rooms are fine, although a little tired. Unfortunately the prices have recently rocketed and it is no longer value for money. Breakfast (normally good) was poor this time: hard, rubbery, dry omelette and coffee machine broken so terrible coffee. Would return if things improve.
