Fun, Quirky Place

What a great place! It was a pleasure to stay at Castle Kanota. Our room was super clean and had a HUGE bathroom. The rooms are all appointed with colonial decorations, a mix of Indian and British heritage. The staff were all very nice and super willing to help you in any way possible. The large veranda in front of the hotel is a nice place for cocktails in the evening. The food was good, too. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone in the area.
So special!!

I was so excited to be staying at a heritage hotel!! I really felt like I could absorb the history! My room was lovely with marble floors and ornate furniture. My bathroom was huge!! The staff were very nice and attentive. Super enjoyed hanging out on the veranda for leisurely evening cocktails and swimming in the pool at sunset watching the birds go by.... ❤️
Love the movie? Then you must visit here!

Castle Kanota is located about 15 kms outside Jaipur and was the location used in the movie Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Viceroy Club. We didn’t stay here and it was quiet the day we visited, but we were so glad we did.

Sounds idealistic - it is

Kanota Castle is just 15 minutes outside of Jaipur off the Agra-Jaipur Expressway. Although it is close to the highway, once inside the gates of the fort guests are immediately in another world. TVs and internet are not available and not missed. This is a perfect stop for an overnight along the Golden Triangle Route, a long weekend to to escape the big city, or for a longer get-away with a group of friends. We discovered this hotel by chance in April 2015 and returned in October 2017.
The property with over 30 rooms belongs to a Jaipur family with a historical connection to the royal court and polo ponies in the stable outside. Each very spacious room is lovingly and authentically decorated. The rooms are situated along the walls of the fort with a separate entrances for each room. There is a main building with a large inviting terrace and a open parlor that happened to provide the set for the scene of the “club” in the 2011 film “Best Marigold Hotel”.
At 7 am the bell of the small Shiva temple (reserved the for the family) is rang and the day seems to start. The gates of the fort are opened and Ladu the properties black dachshund and his cohorts -small Terrie mixes- patrol the grounds for any errant monkeys and will stop for a stomach rub if you are lucky. Only in the evening did we see Pablo, the fluffy white cat stroll outside. Chickens, and in the evening, peacocks roam the grounds. From the window of upstairs dining area, the emu can be seen out to the back of the property.
I felt confident to let my girls, ages 5 and 12 explore, run and play on the grounds. You can stroll along the top of the fort walls and find “secret stairwells” and ramps that were used for rolling the canons around. The same canons have now been painted in black and red decorate the terrace. The fort's and the family's history can be learned about in a small museum on the property.
Don’t miss the opportunity to sit at the round table at the corner of the terrace and watch your kids swing under the shade of the tree. We spied a parakeet nest and spent a peaceful morning relaxing there and drinking coffee.
The marble pool is a great place to relax and the staff - who seem to cater to more local guests than expats - are kind, helpful and discreet. I know it sounds idealistic- it is.
This hotel if wonderful for couples, but I am writing this review from the viewpoint of a mom who has international guests and sometimes wants to get the family out of the city.
Pro Tip: If you are an expat living in India and have visitors - take your guests here and book breakfast and dinner at the hotel. You will have plenty of time to explore Jaipur during the day and after running the gauntlet on the street by the Place of the Winds, you will be happy to come “home” to the peaceful fort. Meals are served family style with good Indian food; considerations are taken for a visitor's spice aptitude (one evening extra pasta was provided for my children's - just in case the food was too spicy). Your guests and you will love it will be a wonderful memory of their visit to India.
