The hotel is very nice, with big bedrooms and nice bathroom. The only two issues we had were the sunlight coming in early in the morning (curtains too small/thin to make the room dark enough) and the absence of curtains in the bathroom, which has a window facing a street. Apart from that, the breakfast was good and dinner at the restaurant excellent. Friendly staff and good atmosphere!

The room locations was a bit confusing, and they only provided one key for 2 people which was a little inconvenient. Room was clean. Overall had a restful stay. The room we stayed at had a very small standing shower stall, I think that would be the only negative thing I had about the room.

I booked the hotel based on the photos I saw. When arrived to the hotel I found reality a bit different from what I expected. The room was small, clean but less comfortable than expected from a 4* hotel. Breakfast was OK but people who live on low-carb diet find it dull and very limited. (not even a plain, no-sugar yogurt!). Stuff was very nice and helpful. WI.FI OK. free parking.

We booked into the Hotel for a 3 night/4 day stay ( Friday-Monday), with 4 friends - so 3 rooms.
Having flown to Bologna, caught a bus from Airport to Bologna centre, then a train to Parma.
Hotel location was purposely chosen for proximity to Rugby stadium ( 5 minute walk ) but is about a mile or so from Parma - we chose to walk, dragging the cases - it wasn't a difficult walk ( took about 30 minutes) but after a 5am start from England - probably not a good decision (For return on Monday we caught a taxi which took about 5 minutes and cost €10).
The rooms were clean and comfortable and included a TV, safe & fridge - but no tea/coffee making facilities which we would have liked.
The Hotel staff spoke good English and were pleasant and friendly - a couple of minor issues were resolved quickly.
( 2 different couples had problems opening the room safe - which, incidentally, was included in the room rate).
On arrival we had coffees and toasted sandwiches in the bar (adjacent to reception desk and a bit draughty when main doors opened).
We ate in the restaurant on the first night - there was a good choice available and the food was well presented - more expensive than outside restaurant but not exceptionally so. ( 2 course meal for 6 of us with drinks was €190 ).
Self service breakfast - as others have noted - was varied - although the hot food available was limited.
The Hotel restaurant was not open on Saturday or Sunday evening - which we found strange - but it did not present a major problem as there were shops and restaurants within easy walking distance.
On Saturday we had walked into Parma and so ate there in the evening - on Sunday the Hotel staff recommended a local restaurant with a wide menu choice ( for comparison with Hotel - price for 6 of us was €120).
All in all I thought the Hotel was good value and ideal for our needs but the surrounding area is a bit industrial and I would say, if you wanted to explore Parma, then a hotel in the town would be a better choice.

Travelling around the world brings me in many places, hotels, motels, and over the years I have found that not all 4 stars hotels deserve that rank, especially in Italy. Yet, hotel Villa Ducale in Parma is an amazing exception. They certainly did not steal that rating. Excellent service, everyone is going the extra mile to help you, serve you and make sure your stay is exceptional. The facilities are great:
- Large rooms - probably they could add a chair or a coach (only one chair for a couple is not enough)
- Small fitness room that can receive 3 or 4 persons at the same time.
- Amazing breakfast area with plenty, I mean plenty of food with all kinds of choice: sweets, fresh fruits, eggs and bacon, ham, cheese, jam, bread, fresh juices, fruit salades, croissants, etc... a real complete breakfast. If you eat correctly, you might not be hungry at noon time. Breakfast times are 7-10am.
- Very large lobby with plenty of space to sit.
- Excellent lobby bar with great appetizers for aperitifs (Italian tradition).
- Majestic Entrance.
Overall, this is one of the best places I have been in Italy. There are certainly other great places in this great country. But most of the time, hotels in Italy reflect the general state of the country: old, visionless, careless, and poor. Hotel Villa Ducale seemes to want to go against the flow, and show that it is still possible in this marvelous nation to rise above the waves and excel in everything they do. They certainly reflect the word Ducale (which means Duke). If all companies follow their example, this country might jump into a new kind of renaissance and find back it's golden age. This is my wish. Thank you Hotel Villa Ducale for your excellent hospitality.
