Stayed here in October (in a private room with shared bathroom).
The rooms were a decent size with a desk and chair. The mattress had seen better days but was still comfortable enough to sleep well. The shared bathroom was fairly clean and not very busy at this time of year (but would recommend taking flip flops with it being shared). The staff were all friendly and helpful and the free breakfast was excellent.
The neighbourhood was lovely and convenient for the train station & buses, we felt very safe walking around in this area (even later at night).
This was more like a budget hotel rather than a hostel and would recommend it to anyone. If we go back to Chicago we will try and stay here again.

We are a group of three friends from Barcelona. We stayed in Chicago three days for discovering the city.
The ambient of the hostel was amazing, very good people, very good service and the bathroom so so good (was so clean and we found everything we need).
The service was amazing, in the bedroom we have all we need.
There are a kitchen and you can share food and cooking wherever you want.
We know a lot of people and make good friends!!

I've stayed in the Chicago Getaway Hostel several times, and it's become my go-to place when life brings me to Chicago. It's basic, but extremely well organised and well run. None of the confusions, misplaced bookings, or dirtiness that some hostels suffer from. It's clean, well lit, lots of public spaces. Best thing is that the staff are ALL friendly, professional, and helpful. Breakfast is okay, coffee could really use work, but what can you expect at these prices. I've hosteled all over the world, and this place is a gem. It's also worth noting that a dorm room can be had for less than HALF the price of the next cheapest hostel I know in Chicago.

Convenient location for downtown, train/subway Fullerton is a 10 minute walk from the accommodation and for all other sightseeing locations. Area felt very safe when walking around even at night there are plenty of local bars in the neighborhood also convenience stores and eateries to refresh yourself. Room was large and clean there are shared bathrooms on each floor no problems with these. Only 20-30 minutes to downtown via train. Staff were very helpful (Matt and Langston) and you get a good breakfast plus free Wi Fi with plenty of coffee to start your day. Would definitely recommend and stay again very good value for money. Whilst this is a hostel and great for parties of people I personally wouldn't recommend it for family groups with young children although there were family groups there who didn't seem to have any problems staying within a hostel environment, but hey that's just my personal opinion.

- Waffles for breakfast, make your own which was good fun
- Large kitchen, kept very clean
- Desktop computers with internet access
- Common room area games
- Clean bathroom and showers
Cons:
- Rooms felt like prison cells
