What People are saying

Cheaper than nearby hotels, comfortable bed, hot shower, great staff!

Bryan B on 20/11/2017 19:27

Location is only 1/2 mile from the famous Bean - easily walkable. Hotel isn't super fancy, but it's much more affordable than nearby hotels, beds are comfortable, rooms are clean, showers have good pressure and hot water, and the staff are all very nice.

Stay here if price is your main concern

Lorraine S on 15/11/2017 20:07

I chose based on price. It cost me $81/night. The Hilton next door had a Conference rate of $275/night. My choice, I knew what I was getting.

Having said that, make sure you're ok with a dorm like hotel. Lots of young people. I was asked to sign a 'I promise I won't party in my room form' upon check in.

The room was small, but clean.

The bed was lumpy, the room was noisy. I actually was startled awake by a man in my room talking...turns out he was in the hall or the room next door. Super thin walls. I could hear complete conversations- no privacy from that stand point.

I heard kids crying, doors slamming, buses in the street, etc. super noisy. Bring a white noise machine.

The temperature was not very changeable. This season only heat is available so I was unable to make the room cooler for sleeping. I could Only make the room hotter.

But I saved a lot of money.

Never again!

I had my wedding in the middle of September and since my venue was in downtown i got a room there for us to be close so i wont have to drive from suburbs.
1) first of all its under construction from outside that you cant even find the hotel itself.
2) they charge $60!!!!! valet parking a night!!!what a rip off!!they charged my make up girl $45 for parking there for an hour!!!!!!i ended up spending almost $200 just for parking there.
3) they gave me the room with the view on the construction. when i was dressing up in the morning for my wedding a bunch of construction workers saw it all too!!!
4) the rooms are small with outdated furniture. no place to put your stuff. like in a cage.
5) the sink is ridiculous! dont believe any pics they have online. its not true at all.
6) what upset me the most that we had 7 families out of state. and they stayed at this hotel only because we did. and they hated it. they had kids. and the double room cant fit even 2 people. so i imagine how uncomfortable they were with kids.
One family was fighting with front desk to get refund as the minute they walked in they refused to stay at this hotel. so they switched to Hilton across the road!
7) only one elevator works in the building so you have to wait for a while to get to your room.
Don't believe any positive reviews! the only good thing is that they were lucky to be built right on the Michigan avenue.

Total dump of a place!!!

Do not go near this place unless you want to catch some sort of disease. Myself and husband were booked to stay here on the 14th October and leave on the 17th. This was our first time in Chicago and was a very special trip for us both. On arrival it was late around 8 o’clock at night and the weather was terrible. Checking in was quick but the reception area smelled damp and musty. I thought the rest might be ok. I was totally wrong. The lift was old, run down and the carpet had not seen a hoover in about a year. The hallway on floor 15 was worse large cellophane wrap on floor because there must have been a leak, carpet disgusting with marks, dust and mould, cables hanging down, wallpaper outdated and smelled of damp. On entering room it was cold, small and outdated. The heater didn’t work, windows had water coming in, carpet was minging, bathroom very small and there was a big black hair on the bed sheets. My husband and I were disgusted and obviously not a good start to our trip. Luckily there was a Hilton across the road which we found going out to get a bite to eat. They couldn’t put us up for that first night but could accommodate us for the Sunday and Monday night. What a relief but we had to stay for 1 night in this dump hole. During that horrendous 1 night stay at 4 o’clock in the morning we were woken by people shouting, smoking and drinking outside in the hallway. My husband had to go down to reception and report this as the phone in room didn’t work. The room carpet because drips coming in from windows was soaking and had wet the bottom of one of our cases. We finally checked out at 10 o’clock the next morning and the guy at reception asked why? I told him the place wasn’t to our standards and not what we paid for. His reply was just to say OK. The place should be condemned or just used as a doss house for people to shelter in even at that standards are nil. DO NOT GO NEAR THIS DUMP!!!!!!!

Worth it

Great location, nice big room with queen size beds and for a really good deal! Yes, the carpet is a bit outdated but the Essex inn is definitely worth its fantastic price, really centered and just next to the Millenium Park, shopping and great places to eat!
