What People are saying
Would not stay again
dlmsighon 03/11/2017 23:13Best thing about this place is the restaurant next door!
This place is somewhat big and spread out. A number of entryways to the buildings. All have a card key system to get in. However the section I was placed in did not! It did but it was broken. So why put people there. I called the front desk about it and they said they would let someone know. Went to dinner and then came back, problem still existed. Went to front desk where someone told me it was broken. Again, why are you putting solo travellers in that building then.
My room had a broken towel bar in the bathroom as well as a wooden bathroom door that looked like someone had kicked it a number of times because it was cracked and dented.
One lamp also did not work.
It was awfully noisy with all the doors SLAMMING automatically closed.
Not worth the price
EBappson 10/10/2017 05:51We stayed at this hotel on our way home from Ohio. The front desk person was quite nice. That's the only positive comment I could make. There was no breakfast offered (usually the Choice family has breakfast included). On the way out to Ohio, we stayed at the Hampton Inn ($15 more) but wanted a Choice hotel for our return trip. We booked a nonsmoking room. The room was theoretically nonsmoking. The hallway reeked of cigarette smoke and the room smelled, perhaps of mold. The room had not been adequately cleaned but we didn't bother to request a change of rooms, I just wiped up the mess on the nightstand (see photo). There was only one nightstand - with a king bed, this left one of us with no place to put our glasses, etc.
The one positive thing - they had real cups and glasses, though I felt obliged to wash them given the condition of the room. The comforter was grimy so I had no confidence it was washed between every guest. The pillows were tiny almost nonexistent. I doubt we will stay there again. It might have been worth $50 but not more.
Great Stay After A Wedding.
Travelcouple15801on 05/10/2017 17:28We recently stayed at the Clarion Hotel following a wedding reception that was held there. It was very convenient as we were consuming alcohol and didn't have to drive afterwards. Several of the other guest that also stayed had no complaints about the hotel. Even though the outside of the hotel looks a tad bit run down, we found the rooms to be neat, clean, and quite comfortable. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. A plus is that there is a restaurant, truck stop, and huge convenience store within pretty easy walking distance. Overall a good stay at a fair price.
Stay for the pool
Melissa Bon 10/09/2017 13:26This hotel seems a bit run down, but it's more of a diamond in the rough. The pool was definately the highlight of our stay. It's rare to find convenient travel hotels that have outdoor pools anymore. Ask for a room with a door that opens up to the pool/courtyard and you'll be set. The maintenance crew does a great job keeping the pool clean and courtyard beautifully landscaped. Note that the restaurant is only open for breakfast and there is no bar.
The Clarion Hotel - DuBois... a nostalgic visit to my childhood
Mark Mon 20/07/2017 12:42I grew up in Du Bois and remember this hotel when it was a Holiday Inn. My mom worked there as a waitress with her fondest memory was that she waited on "Henny" Youngman - an American comedian and violinist famous for his mastery of the "one-liner" including, "Take my wife... please."
Anyway, I returned to Du Bois for a class reunion and chose this hotel based on it's low price compared to the other hotels in the area. I was greeted by Eileen, at the front desk. She was friendly and upon learning that my mom worked there several years ago, offered to show me the hotel's library (yes, library!) that was part of the dining area. She gave me a little history on why this library exists which was kind of surprising. You'll have to ask her about it when you stay there.
Next, was a dip in the pool. It was fun to swim in an outdoor pool at a hotel again. I remember travelling with my family as a child and splashing in outdoor pools, never wanting to leave. Nowadays, It seems like most pools are indoors and don't get the use that this pool does. There were adults and children swimming or sunning around the pool. A lot of laughter and shouts of "Marco... Polo" filled the air. This "kidney shaped" pool and full-grown trees nearby was a relaxing setting that is rarely seen at budget hotels today.
My room was very comfortable with a nice amount of space to relax in. The king size bed had the sheets turned down and was very inviting for this weary traveller. There was free wi-fi with several "hot-spots" to connect my laptop wirelessly to the Internet. I was able to tune into a variety of channels on the large, flat screen TV. The bathroom was clean and updated with nice water pressure in the shower. The AC unit worked well, keeping my room at a comfortable temperature.
The breakfast buffet was a very pleasant surprise. There was sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, toast and much more to eat and drink. The hot foods were actually hot, unlike many of the breakfast buffets I've eaten at. More importantly, everything actually looked and tasted good! NOTE: There is an extra charge for the buffet - it is not free like at other hotels.
I had the opportunity to chat with the chef, Amy, who works six days a week and takes great pride in her craft. NOTE: if you want to enjoy some great food, you'll have to stay any day but Sunday as they don't offer breakfast that day.
Although I enjoyed my stay at this hotel, I want to point out it is certainly not perfect. There was a gouge in one of the ceiling tiles in my room and the hallway showed some wear from people bumping into the walls with their suitcases. However, for the price, you can't expect a gleaming facility live a five-star Hilton!
Next time, I'm in Du Bois, I will be staying at this hotel. It is a great value for the money.
