I usually need to find a government rate when I travel. During my last trip, I tried the Clarion, which didn't have a government rate per se but offered one that met the per diem requirements. The hotel is a quirky, fairly small old building. I had a quiet queen-bed corner room on the 7th floor with a view of the Tribune tower and one window onto the airshaft. The room was compact rather than tiny--perfectly adequate. Very comfortable bed. Spacious bathroom that seemed to have been renovated fairly recently. Helpful service at the front desk. Decent breakfast (interesting bacon) in somewhat odd basement room. The elevator was not shaky but was slow, so I often descended via the central staircase to save time. Less than 5 minutes walk to my office, and near restaurants and BART (lobby also had a door that opened directly onto a restaurant with excellent Pakistani/Indian food--try all the different kinds of naan). I'd definitely stay again.

The Clarion was near where we wanted to be and was reasonably priced so we booked it. There are a few things to be aware of. The hotel is in a very old building. The rooms were small - it reminded me of an interior cabin on a cruise ship with little room between the bed and either wall. The layout of the floors is rather odd - the rooms are in the interior part, not along where the windows are. I believe rooms facing the front may have windows, but the rest do not. Instead you have a very small opening, covered by a shutter, that faces an interior wall. No natural light at all. If you have any claustrophobia, these rooms would be unsuitable. I'd ask for a room with a real window. I couldn't tell how light it was outside and it was disconcerting. The place was clean enough. Breakfast was nothing special - reconstituted egg product, bacon, and the typical bread and starch options. Served in a windowless basement. Overall, it was just an OK experience. Nothing I'd bother to complain about but I'd probably not book there again.

Visited for a quick trip to San Fran for a concert. Having never lodged at a Clarion, I didn't know what to expect. From the moment we walked in, Farida at the Front Desk was welcoming and full of smiles. She took the time to inquire about out plans and even made some wonderful suggestions of noteworthy attractions in the area. We were later greeted by Ayu, who shared insight about top foodie spots in the area. Later discovering she was indeed the General Manager. Rooms were clean and modern in appointment. Breakfast was good and regularly tended to when served. Overall I would absolutely stay here again and recommend you do too if your in the area and enjoy friendly and attentive service. Cheers.

I don't usually review but felt I had to after reading all the negative reviews Clarion Hotel had received. Based on what I had read here, I was not going to stay . But intuitively it felt right and , to be honest, I had little other option in terms of the location I needed.
And am so so glad I listened to my intuition.
Clarion Hotel was great. I stayed 5 nights during a conference and it was all I needed and more. Clean, quiet, friendly, convenient location, decent all-inclusive breakfast . Maybe I got lucky with my room location because otherwsie I really can't understand nor relate to the negative reviews here as my experience was positive.
I used frequent flyer points to subsidise the cost , so for me it was value for money but i agree that the full price seems quite high but it's probably on par or even less than the going rate for the area.

Choice hotels is already the bottom of the barrel when it comes to hotel chains, but this location really sells it. Need some flexibility in your booking? Forget about it. Looking for a nice location? Look elsewhere.
I would book again if I were booking a room for someone who had wronged me.
