Basic but Charmingly Old Fashioned.

We stayed for 2 nights as part of a touring group. Rooms with terrace are large but very charmingly old fashioned, basic and a little shabby. Garden areas need a lot of attention but there are a fantastic array of birds in the garden. Pre dinner drinks are served at 7pm in a lovely reception room followed by eating together on a big table. Food was a let down. 1950's style Indian mixed with some English. Bland milky soups to start then cauliflower cheese served with bland Indian/English dishes. I think the owners think British travellers are not used to proper curries and are still using recipes from days gone by. Lovely owners and helpful staff.

Food simple but good, staff friendly and helpful, drinks cheap. Location good, however, room 11, looked nothing like the photos seen of the hotel. It has seen better days and needs some tlc, The room smelt fusty, and bathroom window covered by dirty looking piece of fabric. Visited as part of excellent Jules Verne Images of India trip.October 2017.
An interesting property

I have given this place 4 stars for the lovely, helpful staff not for the facilities & standards. It is a very basic property set in a rural location. We were lucky as I think we probably had the best room (no. 7). Every one is served on one long table, the food is very simple & no choice but good. The grounds could do with some tlc but were pleasant. We were not lucky enough to meet the Maharaja who owns the place but his staff do him proud. One downside is all the noisy barking dogs in the area, there are also monkeys who jump on the roof. It is a short taxi ride to the nearest town.
Heritage hotel- full of character

We stayed as part of a small group so transport was not a problem as the hotel is a bit off the beaten track. We were in monsoon time so we didn't get to see the mountain ranges. The owner, the Maharani of Lambagraon-Kangra, joined us after dinner and talked very interestingly about her experience as a Member of Parliament. The food was very good- even an authentic cauliflower cheese!
There were lots of monkeys around and they made a noise like thunder when landing on the corrugated iron roof. It all added to the character of the place.
Quirky heritage hotel

Location -This summer residence of the Maharaja of Kangra is located on a hillside a few km outside Dharamsala, so you need your own transport. It is surrounded by trees and there are steps everywhere, even from the road, so it's not for the less than sure-footed. Because of the trees, the views are not spectacular and the gardens are nothing to write home about, although there is plenty of outside space to lounge around in.
Rooms - these are quirky, filled with old furniture in a slightly haphazard way, but spacious and with all mod-cons. As the temperature drops at night, hot water bottles and space heaters can be supplied. Although the property is old, it is not particularly smart or grand.
Restaurant - meals are served on one communal table, but as there are only about 10 rooms the place does not feel busy. There is very little choice of food - it just arrives on the table, but is pleasant enough. Breakfast is equally limited, but eggs are cooked to order. The Maharani, a very interesting lady, with a wealth of public service in India, may come down to chat at the end of dinner.
Service - the few staff turn their hands to everything, from bell-boys to waiters, to cashiers, to housekeepers, pretty efficiently.
