What People are saying

Basic 3* hotel that needs serious renovations

djonnyone on 13/11/2017 10:49

Friendly staff, big buffet with good food, bungalows are cosy with nice view and balcony but old furniture and doors and windows are not water resistant :)
Nice small sand beach, beautiful but overcrowded blue lagoon, nice rocky parts for diving. If you want to lay on sun bed all day by the pool or on the beach all day long and forget about everything else, sure. If you want to visit Malta or Gozo, you have to be super careful and double check with the reception each time about boat schedule and your reservation for it. Otherwise they will forget to send a boat for you (twice) and will leave you stuck on the harbour with nothing but a vending machine inside.
Many web sites and booking engines advertise hotel to be a 4* but it is far from that, and it is officially 3* anyway

1970s Time Machine

This hotel is practically the only building on the island of Comino. It has been built in the 1970s and hasn't much refurb since. I remember this bathroom from early childhood (I am 50!). Food is very average and often overcooked. We had all inclusive, limited ourselves to eating vegetables and fish - first time I lost weight on holiday! But there are positive aspects: beer is included in the all inclusive, there is a dive-center right next to the hotel, staff is very friendly and professional, air conditioning is working well and the mattresses are good. So, as long as you take it with a sense of humour, you can still have a great holiday.

Short break in Comino

Robert C on 18/10/2017 14:36

We have just returned from a short (3 day) stay in Comino at the Comino Hotel. It was great! We live in Malta so easy getting there. Just a short ride on a ferry direct to the hotel. We knew the weather would be good with daytime temperatures of 24°C and the same in the sea.

Don't expect super-lux at the Comino Hotel, but the room was more than adequate with a sea view. In any event we weren't planning on staying in the hotel, but to be outside either at their pool, in the sea, or walking.

We didn't like the food the first night (fatty pork!) but they redeemed themselves the next night with some wonderful roast beef (pink and tender). Breakfast was the usual choice of "full English", continental, or cereals etc.

The best beach is at Santa Maria, just a short and glorious walk round the bay. It's safe for kids, not crowded, and has good "beach" food.

We also walked to the Blue Lagoon, which would be beautiful if not for the rampant over-commercialization! We turned round and headed back to the hotel!

The hotel shuts at the end of this month and doesn't reopen until May. But we'll probably go back to the island just to walk around.

Beautiful location for a relaxing holiday

I booked this hotel because previously i had visited Comino on a day trip years ago and always said I would like to return for longer; as the only hotel on the island there is no other option. Go with this in mind and you wont be disappointed! The whole set up makes it a good leveler and people watching heaven - everyone arrives on the same rickety boat & yes your luggage does get wet if a wave comes over the top, and what you see when you get there is what you get! Most people just get on with it and enjoy their stay, but there were still a few expecting more....the website is years out of date, so don't go by that. Yes the hotel has seen better days, but it only pertains to be 3 star & that is what it is. We actually wanted a quiet get away from it all holiday so chose the bungalows over the hotel and I am so pleased we did. A 10 minute walk over a hilly gravel path (or bone shaking minibus drive) gives them the extra feeling of remoteness. The view from the bungalow was stunning and lack of light pollution on "the dark side" of the island allowed fabulous views of the night sky. If you are not prepared to walk over rough paths or do not want to be far from the bar, the bungalows will not suit you, so stick to the hotel. Although breakfast is served at the bungalow site and there is a daytime bar, all other facilities are at the hotel. There is a nice quiet swimming pool and bay by the bungalows, but the larger pool, restaurant, bar, tennis courts are at the hotel. There are towels available from hotel reception, its up to you how often you return them. Plenty of sun loungers around the hotel, as we went at the end of the season, not busy, but the sea and the swimming pool were at least mid twenties still, very pleasant temperature. Not sure about the amenities in the hotel, but no kettle or ironing board in bungalows, but there is a fridge - we took our own kettle/tea/coffee etc, didn't bother with borrowing the hotel iron/board at the hotel itself, not worth the hassle and it really is a very dress down/casual place anyway - glad we didn't bring our posh frocks - not that kind of place at all!! We went with the intention to chill, play tennis and snorkel and couldn't have been happier. there are none of the annoying animation team coercing you into aqua-aerobics or volleyball - in fact unless you want something and go to the bar/reception yourself, whilst always extremely courteous with a hello or a nod, you are totally left alone! Coffee is very good, alcoholic drinks on all inclusive were limited but perfectly adequate. Only one tennis court was functional, (No 2) the rest are in a poor state of repair, but one was all we needed, we play every morning so flood lights not required - just as well because we didn't see any! Snorkeling and diving was superb, lots of bays to visit, not just the Blue Lagoon. We had to see for ourselves the carnage that is the Blue Lagoon on a weekend & it truly was disgusting, overcrowded and our idea of hell; it was never our intention to join them, just to see how the cheap tours exploited this beautiful haven, and it did have to be seen to be believed....horrible!!....however, we returned out of hours when all the day boats had gone & peace had returned and the Lagoon returned to stunning quietness! Day boats are there between 11-3 so avoid these times, especially weekends if you don't want to get involved. Ironically the best sites for snorkeling is not the sand of the lagoon but around rocks and caves so there are far better sites to go than the lagoon anyway. Walking the whole island doesn't take long, but again not for the feint hearted or tenderfooted, but it really is a beautiful island to explore.
Food was well cooked and presented as buffet, always choice of carved meat, fish, pasta and vegetables etc. It is doubtful you would go hungry but it is not the stunning lavish 24 hr/day spread that better hotels offer. On the plus side it is not overrun by obese tourists trying to stuff the very last bit of food into their mouths to get their monies worth, so i will take this in preference any day. House wine very drinkable, we only had the rose, but very nice. Chilled water, sparkling and still available everywhere. A very eclectic mix of tourists, English, German, Dutch, Scandinavian, even Maltese. No evening entertainment except on Friday/Saturday night with what could only be described as occasional music on the Friday - one man and a guitar and a small disco on Saturday. One tiny shop that has very little in it at all, so make sure you bring anything you need with you - including cigarettes. If you enjoy the hotel for its basic comfort and cleanliness in a beautiful location, I am sure you will have a lovely time. Make your own entertainment and have a relaxing time.

Paradise Island

Thomas N on 07/10/2017 10:40

I have lived and worked in Comino during the years of 1981 to 1986, when the hotel was owned and managed by a Swiss company. In those days the hotel was one of the best in Malta. We had the best Mediterranean Windsurf Centre, Tennis Centre, Diving centre etc. Having booked there as a guest so many years later, it is sad to see how all activities have been completely neglected. No more Windsurfing and no more Tennis. The diving activity is still there. However, the prices have not increased since that time also, so the value is great. I love the arrival by the hotel boat, the room and bed was comfortable, balcony was furnished and had stunning views. I went daily in the morning before all the tourist crowds to the Blue Lagoon that is a 10 min. walk and swam in the most beautiful turquoise blue waters of the mediterranean sea. Walking across the Island that is full of wild thymian, that i picked and use for cooking at home was a real pleasure. Cleaner then there the air you breath is hard to find. The food was good and generous. Was happy to find the same chef who worked with me 36 years ago and some of the same friendly and wonderful employees still there. Whatever the negatives, the positives are there and for the value, yes i could say i go back again.
