Waiting staff with attitudes:

The Hotel being situated within a castle was, as expected not modern and upmarket, but our low rating is due to the most appalling waiting staff EVER experienced by us. If English is your only language, we suggest you give the Restaurant a wide berth. Both contemptuous waitresses could not possibly be less helpful if they wanted to. Currently on a road trip, we have until now, encountered wonderful waiting staff who have managed the language barrier in a delightful manner.
(You need to wonder why a Hotel catering for International travellers would not have multi-language menus?)
OK for the price.

Location could not be better, in a lovely square of old honey coloured stone buildings with trees (yes there is traffic but not much and people drive slowly around Ciudad Rodrigo), it's a 2 minute walk to the Cathedral.
The building is old, it's seen better days inside and could do with a facelift but it is cheap and friendly. The staff do not speak English (they were patient with my broken Spanish though).
Our room was an average size, it had a reasonable bathroom and a balcony looking onto the lovely square. My only criticism of the room is that the walls are very thin - they need to invest in some serious soundproofing. We could here everything next door - thankfully this was limited to sneezing, coughing, plugging things in and talking - but it made us quite uncomfortable and disturbed our sleep.
We tried the restaurant and it was quite good, we had breakfast that was incredibly cheap and ok for the price.
We parked our car in the public car park just outside the walls which is a 10 minute walk from the hotel (there is also a supermarket car park where parking is free). If you struggle to park early in the day don't worry lots of people go to Ciudad Rodrigo for the day and you will get parked ok later in the day.
Disappointing

There were good and bad points to this hotel.
The room was comfortable and clean, good central location. Breakfast not bad although a bit limited.
Very few of the staff spoke any English. We attempted to eat in the restaurant one evening. Were led into a dark room and the lights were switched on but the waitress clearly did not want to be bothered. Her lack of English was not a problem; we don’t speak Spanish, but her attitude was frankly appalling - when we were unable to understand her and tried to use a phone to look up simple phrases she stalked out of the room and did not return. When we got up to leave and find another restaurant, there was not the hint of an apology, she was clearly glad not to have to bother.
We had gained the impression from the website when booking of a pleasant little hotel with a bar and seating outside. The outside is actually a road, I can’t imagine how the photograph of the tables was taken, you’d have got run over. There did seem to be a bar next door which might have been part of the hotel but it was difficult to tell, it was very loud and not that comfortable with only one outside table.
We also had a slightly worrying problem with security - we went out to dinner and came back to find our room door wide open. Fortunately nothing had been stolen. We reported this to the desk as we definitely had not left it open ourselves and the receptionist, who did speak a little English, said she would report it to the manager but suspected a maid had left the door open by mistake. I’ve no idea if she did or did not, we never heard back about it and ended up carrying our laptop out with us as there seemed nowhere secure to leave it - there was no apology or further explanation.
We were travelling out of season so it is possible that the hotel was not fully open although this was not mentioned when we booked. The room was fine but we didn’t feel welcome compared to every other place we’d been to in Portugal and Spain on this trip. My recommendation would be go to Ciudad Rodrigo but find another hotel if you’re English - perhaps another nationality would do better.
on our way to Portugal

this is a good option, friendly staff and ok rooms + bathroom. The beauty is the nice terrasse in front and the little park next to it (allow kids to play) We paid 80EUR for 2 adults + daughter incling breakfast. Again we recommend this place
Appearances deceiving...

Ok for an o'night stop. Hotel quoted secure parking available for motorcycles, in fact none was available. Good WiFi and small bar at reception made a fair G&T otherwise unremarkable. Main bar closed and restaurant seemed dark and uninviting so neither were used.
