If you want to experience old world charm in magnificent surroundings then Craig's Royal Hotel ticks all the boxes including great service from all staff however the much touted dining experience is significantly over rated. The food was production line bland and presentation second rate at best. We experienced mediocrity with the porterhouse & the crumbed pork cutlet. If you want the ambience of period lodging then stay at Craig's but eat elsewhere!

Our check in experience wasn't that great - felt like we were bothering the woman and when we told her we hadn't parked in the 10 minute zone - we were made to feel very uncomfortable. My partner offered to move the car - but by that time it was too late to correct our grievous error. They take your car and park it somewhere else, so every time you want to leave you have to ask for it and when you return you have to find someone - it is not a 24 hour reception desk - so you have to go in the Pokies at night and find someone. Lobby and restaurants and coffee shop were all nice. Our room was ok - the faucet wouldn't shut off and we had a cold draft through the door - but it was quiet, we slept fine and it was well cleaned. Certainly a beautiful building.

This hotel is all you would expect it to be except - this is the hardest most uncomfortable bed I have slept on for years and it had a sliught slope towards the edge of the bed. i had the worst sleep for many years.
Perhaps they could put toppers on temporarily?
other flaw was breakfast buffet (included in tariff). hats on for including the buffet and valet car parking but the breakfast buffet operators have to service those in the room rather than input large a large order fo group of 17 yet to arrive. They should be able to call a duty manager if this kind of thing happens and they can't cope at that moment.
Moreover although it was after 9am they should have kept toasts/hams/ croissants etc reasonable topped up and not run out. As it was they had to top up the ham (which was great) three times in 5 minutes because they only put a few slices on the first few times and this was ridiculous.
Having said that mostly the staff were natural and great and the restaurant was very good if suffering from the current trying to be clever with food syndrome which didn't always gell.
If the beds were fixed we would definitely return

This wonderful hotel is located in the centre of Ballarat CBD in an excellent position to access theatre, shops and restaurants. We stayed in a beautiful room that had a renovated bathroom in traditional style with good lighting, lovely amenities and great water pressure in the roomy shower. The room was a little noisy at times with passing guests in the hallway easily heard from within the room. The bed was comfortable, valet parking quick and Jason the concierge friendly and efficient. I only wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the well recommended restaurant in the hotel. We look forward to returning to Craig's another time soon.

Travelling through Ballarat we stopped and had a very good meal served in fabulous surroundings, by nice efficient people. We liked it so much we looked at the accommodation and decided to come back for a mid week break staying in one of their fabulous rooms
