What People are saying

A dining experience in the Borders to rival anything in the City

Courtenay Y on 11/06/2017 23:49

On the occasion of me birthday, my wife took us to the Cringletie House Hotel for their Dinner Menu. Incredible experience and great value for money: the three-course menu (for £36.50) + coffee was enhanced by some canapés and an 'amuse bouche' of Cullen Skink (not my favourite). The food was excellently presented (more later); the service was superb - relaxed and not obsequious; the setting - Scottish country house - grand; first floor restaurant with painted cherubs on the ceiling and tartan carpets with views of green hills, trees and ubiquitous sheep; a really great niche find!
The glass of Prosecco (not in the meal deal) was OK but a bit over-priced at £8.00 each; we were served 3 small canapés - pleasant but nothing to write much about; then I had - as a starter - the rare flat iron steak with a tasty blue cheese, walnut and rocket salad; my wife has the charred mackerel (which could have done with a little more tart flavouring); then we were served the 'amuse bouche' which didn't thrill me; breads were OK and I asked for some oil & balsamic vinegar to go with the ciabatta ('No problems'); my wife enjoyed the sea bass and Asian vegetables but this could have done with some additional limes - she got lemons; with tat she had a glass of the white Pays d'Oc - which she had to send back as it wasn't cold - the replacement was fine; my glazed breast of duck was a little too tough but the taste of the rest of the main plate was very good. I had a half-bottle of the Rioja Crianza - very pleasant (at £16.00).
We decided that the mix of Cranachan and chocolate and cherries was too good not to share. Then coffee was brought - though I opted for a French coffee (another extra) but I wasn't driving. All in all a very pleasant evening.

Savoury Afternoon Tea

Mike J on 11/06/2017 21:39

Arrived to an imposing view of the hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The savoury afternoon tea was delicious with a selection of open sandwiches, savoury tartlets and cheese scones (which were light, fluffy and to die for) with chutney and cream cheese as well as pots of tea refilled as you like. Added to the lovely setting made this a welcome treat.

Good Value but not as Boutique as I expected

Our family stayed in April while spending a few days in the Peebles area. It's not a castle really, but a large baronial home. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the breakfast, which was included for us, was very hearty. The staff was kind. One night I booked the pre fixe menu in the dining room. The menu items sounded delicious but they didn't deliver in reality and I didn't think it was worth the price tag. On another night we ate from the bar menu and that food, which was much more reasonably priced, was quite good. I'd recommend eating off that menu if you are included to dine at the hotel. I think if they elevated their level of service and deigned to make the place more welcoming, it would be all the more hospitable and lovely.

Great restaurant

Had dinner on two evenings whilst staying in the Borders. Interesting menu, good food, well prepared and presented. Stunning property and location. All the staff were very friendly. Will return to attend the 7 course dinner, bed and breakfast package in the future.

Amazing hotel with great staff!!

We held my daughters wedding here yesterday, 28th May. Everything from start to finish was first class. The hotel itself is stunning with lovely gardens and beautiful scenery round about you. A walk round the walled garden is a must with the lovely shrubbery and picnic area, along with garden games including chess and draughts. The staff could not do enough to make this a wonderful experience for everyone at the wedding. Johanna you should be very proud of every member of your team. They do a brilliant job!! Thanks again and we will definitely return to enjoy your hotel and the amazing food that we were served last night. It has been a long time since I have ate such tender, flavoursome piece of beef - again please pass on our thanks to your kitchen team and everyone else at Cringletie
