Decent Hotel
CalgaryAlphanon 26/04/2017 23:06We stayed for one night while on our way back up the Baja, and were reasonably pleased with the Desert Inn, San Ignacio. It's certainly nothing special, but for a one-night stop, it did the trick.
The rooms are basic, the beds aren't very comfortable, wi-fi only works in the lobby, etc... but the setting is rather pretty as it's surrounded by palm trees and you drive past a lush palm grove and oasis to get to the hotel.
The on-site restaurant was surprisingly good, and has a much wider menu than the Desert Inn in Guerrero Negro (see images I'm posting of the menu). In fact, in every way we thought this Desert Inn location was superior to the one in Guerrero Negro.
There is a pool, but it's very small, and literally has roots growing into it (breaking through tiles) from nearby plants, which makes me question the cleanliness and chemical balance of the water, but I did see some people go in.
All in all, this was a much more pleasant place to stay than Guerrero Negro, and it's very likely that we'll be back on our next trip down the Baja!
Convenient stopover
pdmancson 17/03/2017 17:28I stayed overnight at the Desert Inn en route to Guerrero Negro. All the other guests appeared to be part of a group of US retirees on a coach trip. It's a mission-style hotel, with rooms wrapped around a central swimming pool.
Comfortable, if well worn, room. 1200 pesos for the night.
Wifi was very slow, and mobile phone signal around San Ignacio isn't good.
I chose to eat dinner and breakfast in a local place at the plaza rather the hotel, so I can't comment on the food.
Nothing really bad to report, but nothing exceptional either. It's fine for a night or two.
Average hotel
pavakealon 10/03/2017 00:27The hotel is built on a courtyard basis similar in style to some of the Mision hotels. The rooms are large but bathrooms small. Road side rooms were noisy when traffic passing and Windows did not fit properly. Wifi available free in reception only . Dining room large and spacious and food choices fairly good although when we stayed they had no fish despite the offers on menu. Very reasonable prices for food. Short walk into San Ignacio square and church.
Nice Hotel just Outside the Town Square
ok3on 06/03/2017 16:46San Ignacio is off Highway 1 by a mile or so. Weather you stay or not, take the time to view. An oasis with a large lagoon, lots of palms. The hotel is a half mile from the square and mission church. Guarded parking. Nice no frills restaurant on premises. Large clean rooms with heat and aircon. Very quiet location. A little expensive compared to other hotels of this standard in Baja Sur due I'm sure to location for whale watching. Would definitely return. Sister hotel to the one in Catavina so layout pretty much the same. Wi-fi only in lobby.
More than a little special
Robert Lon 26/02/2017 07:58Take my word for it, folks. The photos on these sites don't do justice to little, obscure hotels like this one. It wasn't all rosy for us. We visited in mid-January to go whale-watching in San Ignacio Lagoon, about a two hour drive (To the lagoon. It's a two-day drive from Tijuana or Ensenada.). There was a winter storm during the night and the desert was wet in the morning. But that's not all. There also was no electricity or running water in the morning. The water in this town must come from aquifers, not gravity. If the pumps don't work there is no water.
Fortunately, we had stocked up at Walmart in Ensenada, and so we washed our hair and faces with bottled water.
But back to the hotel. The staff could not have been kinder. The food was wonderful. The hotel itself is larger and more spread out than the photos show. The rooms were nicely designed and had all the amenities you would expect. The whale watching was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They really should call it "whale-touching" because the baby whales come right beside the boat and seem to enjoy being touched.
And to cap off a visit to a tiny little town in the middle of the Baja Peninsula, just as we were driving past this memorable hotel in late afternoon, on our way back north, the lights came back on. You just can't make this stuff up.
