A surprising little gem

I was quite sceptical about the Dovedale but my stay surpassed my expectations. The hotel is tucked away in a side road within a residential area which means parking at the front is limited but there are around 10 spaces around the back.

I was met with a warm welcome, check in was efficient (for such a small desk!) and my room was very good. Clean, tidy, limited a little in size but not to the extent that it was a negative.

Breakfast was included in the price and was very good indeed. A great way to start the following morning!

I also ate in the hotel during the evening of my stay. The food was excellent and I would recommend people eating there even if you are not planning to stay. Very very well presented and very reasonably priced.

Overall - appearances can be deceptive and the Dovedale certainly ticked a few boxes in regards to deception!

We have stayed here twice now for nights out in Cleethorpes it’s central location makes it ideal. Car parking is on street and can be troublesome but there are plenty of other places to park. Room was clean and tidy and equipped with full tea facilities,sky and towels. We didn’t have breakfast as we were meeting friends in the morning but this is served down in the restaurant. Will stay here again.

Arrived early and check in was available. Dinner was really good but expensive. There was no Hot Chocolate in the room. Breakfast is cooked to order. The hotel has very good serving staff. Check out is not until 12 noon which is really good. However my parents wanted to check out earlier which was OK but the receptionist was asking me to check out at the same time. Although she informed us we could still use the room until 12 noon it would save us queuing later. I didn't want to check out at that point and found the receptionist a little rude. My parent's TV in the room was a little difficult to operate and not working but someone came immediately to fix it. There were no shelves in the bathroom. We had a room with a balcony but being on a street with hotels/houses opposite, it would have been nice to have perhaps a net on the balcony window so that we could keep the curtains open but not feel overlooked. I had booked the room for my parents as well as our own on my credit card as pre-authorisation. All other hotels we stayed at during the week only took the payment when we checked out so that my dad could pay for his room separately. However this hotel took the payment automatically so they had to credit my card for my parents room. I think it would be useful if the hotel website explains the parking is at the back of the hotel. Better toiletries in the bathroom would be an improvement.

I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 night stay, lots of details that made my stay pleasurable. Room service, a bath, four poster bed, black out curtains, very clean as well. Breakfast was very good, I didn't have a meal but I had a sandwich with a side order of chips which was delicious. Car parking as well.

If we could rate 0 we would!

Upon arrival we followed the Manager as he showed us to our room, wondering why he had two sets of keys. As we approached our room we were horrified to see the state of the outside of the room (please see pictures of green door), the wood was rotten and rendering above the door appeared to be falling apart. The room had a wooden window that wasn't closed properly, and before we even got into the room the manager said "I've got another room to show you I promise it's nicer than this one". The room was also external to the hotel itself. There was no way we could stay in the room shown and feel safe or comfortable, so we accepted the offer to see another room.

Much to our surprise we left the hotel premises and walked down Dolphin Street and into a house. The room itself was modern and had all the amenities you need (including iron and fan) as well as the benefit of Sky TV. However, the beds were very uncomfortable and there is no black out blind and the curtain did not cover the window. The bathroom was not clean, as can be seen in the photos attached of the shower tray. Also there was no bulb in the lamp, which when pointed out to the Manager he simply said "a previous guest probably pinched it", but did not go and get a new lamp bulb. Also there is a random wire hanging out of the wall which was concerning. We didn't feel safe in our room and was woken up on three different occasions throughout the night by people coming in, so they are good rooms to stay in if you are going on a night out in Cleethorpes, not if you want a good nights sleep.

We did not mention our unhappiness with the room that night as we were in Cleethorpes for a family party. However, after a sleepless night we did mention the above to the receptionist who told us she couldn't do anything as she was only a receptionist and the Manager wasn't in and was also very defensive about our comments. My mum even asked the receptionist to look at the room with her so she could see the evidence for herself. The receptionist kept telling us we had booked the Dolphin Rooms that is separate to the hotel, even though our booking clearly stated The Dovedale Hotel. When asked about the variance in price, she advised it could possibly be cheaper but wouldn't confirm anything.

We left tired and quite unhappy that nothing had been done given our experience. My mum then called the hotel this evening after looking on Booking.com and finding The Dolphin Rooms to in fact be cheaper than the hotel. The Manager advised he would look at the room and requested we emailed our photographs to support what we were saying. Once we had done this, he replied saying he would refund a percentage of our payment. Frustrating that as the customer, we had to call following our stay for the hotel to take action.
