Mary Celeste at Christmas

Chris P on 19/09/2017 17:42

For those considering booking for a stay at Draper's Hall over Christmas this year - read on........
We stayed at Draper's Hall last Christmas. We booked into our tiny room during the afternoon of Christmas Eve. We were immediately told that there were NO dining facilities available that evening and even the bar was closed, and so we had to eat out.
We had lunch on Christmas Day which cost one hundred & twenty five pounds each (excluding wine) which was very nice but sadly again there were NO dining facilities or bar available in the evening and so we arranged for the cheese and biscuits that we hadn't eaten at lunch to be left out for us.
Boxing Day saw us trawling the streets of Shrewsbury trying to find somewhere open for lunch and dinner because guess what? There were NO dining facilities or bar available.
We paid a lot of money for what amounted to bed & breakfast at this place, and really wished that when we booked we had been told of the miserable lack of facilities at the time.
Things may have changed for this Christmas, but if you are going to book for a Christmas stay it may well be worth asking what is available in case like us you find yourselves aboard Shrewsbury's Mary Celeste.

Pretentious

Stayed at the hotel on 11th August for the Shrewsbury Flower Show, booked the room months ago for the two of us and my daughter who's 9, booked a deluxe room and after some confusion at check in which is at the bar where we were told a booking couldn't be found we were eventually allocated the Lime room; the room has a small kitchen and lounge type area and a bathroom off the kitchen, the bathroom has a shower only . First impressions were that the bedroom was very small with just room to get around the bed , the bed is a double and incredibly hard , no wardrobe just a coat stand and no coat hangers, the room overlooks the courtyard which was very noisy until quite late. No night porter to contact overnight if required just a phone number to call, no parking at the hotel The room was just incredibly uncomfortable especially for £170 without breakfast which has to be booked on check in ??, there isn't a single comfortable chair, the sofa bed listed in the room description is not a sofa bed but a very hard uncomfortable low leather sofa, more confusion in the morning as we decided not to bother with breakfast even though we had not booked it, the waitress was told she could have our breakfast!! No one asked on check out if everything was ok, just keen to take payment, bit of a fuss made about cancelling off £30 for breakfast which wasn't 'booked' anyway, noisy, uncomfortable, overpriced room in a hotel with some beautiful features but which is rather pretentious in that service doesn't measure up to the price and is disorganised and generally unwelcoming.

Horrible

This place is horrible.

We paid £150 for a "suite" which was two rooms one of which was about the size of an average hall with a tv the size of a 1980s computer monitor.

The bedroom (average size with a queen size bed) led through to a bathroom with a "mind your head" sign because the door was five foot tall.

I tried to call ahead the reception staff was curt at best and frustrated me to the point I had to hang up.

No room service is available.

I was also quite frankly shocked that there was no water available in the room I had to walk down four flights of stairs to get some (and bring it back up myself)

I had to do the same to get a glass of wine.

This place is really really really bad.

Oh and there is no reception we were checked in st the bar!! Also there is no lift (my wife was 36 weeks pregnant and had to walk up all these stairs)

I just went to complain was physically pushed by a bar fly and had a bottle of water shoved in my face with the words "here's your water".

Seriously my worst hotel experience of all time.

Lovely old building, lovely oak panelled restaurant.

Very nice, old interior. Comfortable chairs. Quite atmospheric, romantic. Helpful, if not 100% professional staff. Presentation excellent, quality of food too. It is situated in the middle of the old part of town, parking maybe an issue although not impossible not too far. Portions, compared what you would normally get in a good restaurant like this, are quite large. Deserves to do well!

A real shame...

Beautiful building and decorated extremely well. We stayed in the wool suite which was very nice. A separate room to watch TV which would be great if you are staying with kids. The room was very clean and the bed very comfy. A little pricey at £140 a night but you don't mind for such a lovely building and room.
The problem was the breakfast and the service. It took 45 minutes to bring it out and when it arrived it was burnt and there were bits missing. The man serving left us there that whole time waiting so the lady cleaning the dining room brought out our toast but it was cold as he'd forgot about it. I assume it was him cooking the breakfast. The lady (who was very nice) said it was his first time. This isn't what you expect for £15 each on top of the price of the room. When I told him that I would like my money back he said that it was £15 because they serve it with fruit?! He didn't apologise or explain anything just gave me the money from the till and that was that.
I would recommend the rooms as they are beautiful but get your breakfast elsewhere. I imagine the bar and restaurant are much the same.
