Wonderful place to stay!

The Hotel du Lion d'Or is a perfect little place in the center of Cauterets that has been in the same family for decades. Our room was spotlessly clean and the hotel has much charm. We had one of our best dinners on our whole trip in the hotel restaurant. Staff was very helpful and contributed to making our stay outstanding. The hotel is right across the street from the beautifully renovated thermal baths and a discount for the entry fee can be obtained from the hotel desk. Free parking is available behind the hotel and was no problem in September but might be in peak summer/winter season. We would strongly recommend this hotel - can't imagine a better place to stay in Cauteret.
Really nice hotel conveniently located

Rooms were comfortable and clean. We had views up to the mountains over the town. Bar area was pleasant. Car parking is available but it is a public parking area and can get busy. Staff were helpful and we would happily stay there again.
I would like to move into this hotel

I've never been more charmed! This hotel is so beautiful and special, I can't say enough good things! We arrived very late after a long drive, and they were incredibly gracious setting us up in our room and making sure we were settled. The views of the town and mountains from the rooms are to die for, and the breakfast was superb. Truly a special place that I can't recommend enough!
A fantastic find in the Pyrenees!

Lots of research indicated Cauterets would be a great base location in the High Pyrenees for hiking and it surely was: a lovely Belle Epoque town (big enough to have all the shops and restaurants you would want, but small enough to explore on foot in an hour), tons of nearby hikes, and the relaxing waters of the natural springs and spa treatments at Les Bains du Rocher conveniently located right across the street from the Hotel Lion d’Or. Free parking is nearby and at the back door.
However, the highlight of our 4-night stay was doubtless our experience at the hotel. A family hotel now run by its 4th generation, we were delighted by the service and the food – both of which exceeded our expectations every day. English is spoken best by the son, Thomas, who knows the local mountains and can advise on where to go to eat, hike, etc., based upon the weather and your desires. We shared our hiking plans one day and he steered us away, because of fog at that elevation that day. Instead, he proposed and took the time to verify better weather at another spectacular location (above the clouds). FYI Cauterets is very close to the Pont D’Espagne and a reasonable 45-60 minute drive to the Cirque de Gavarnie. Hikes around both are not to be missed!
Imagine a place run by your ideal French grandmother: artfully and warmly decorated with mostly antique furniture and old copper and so on, its charming bar, sitting and breakfast rooms promising equally comfortable, well-appointed bedrooms. We stayed in number 8, but from what we understood from our fellow guests, the same level of appointment is throughout. The rooms were super-clean (daily), the towels and in-room robes large and fluffy, the mattress comfortable, and the bath fixtures modern and working. There was a good variety of complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. Early risers could have hot tea or coffee in the room, where a small fridge offered two (complimentary) bottles of water per day. A small in-room safe seems almost superfluous, given the room’s impressive locks. It looks like the family has spent years investing in quality appointments throughout, whenever they did work on the hotel. Clearly, they are in it for the long haul, skimping on nothing. The furniture is not fancy, but more well-polished, country-style, fitting perfectly in that charming ‘guest house’ atmosphere. The service is friendly, caring and quick, never stuffy or formal. If there is anything they can do for you, I am sure they will try. We were celebrating our 30th anniversary and I had brought a bottle of champagne for the room. They were happy to lend some champagne glasses. They kept my cooler ice in the kitchen freezer. They noticed the fellow sitting alone at the breakfast table next to ours was reading a magazine on the table, not always practical… So, they took the initiative to bring him an overturned bowl to rest it at a better angle. They do not miss a trick and were friendly and eager to make our stay perfect!
The breakfast is not to be missed! Homemade: yogurt, madeleines, blueberry and spice cakes, cookies, applesauce, jams, etc. Local: hams, honey, cheese, eggs, etc. GREAT local pastries and breads! Fresh fruits, coffee tea and rich, dark hot chocolate, hot and cold milk, etc. This is the first place in my life where they heated up the coffee cups in a warmer! The quality of the ingredients was superior!
We didn’t try the local restaurants except the night of our arrival, because, once we saw the quality and effort in the breakfast, we were tempted by the modestly priced prix fixe menu offered at night. Announced on a chalkboard daily, the dishes changed but the formula was the same: soup, composed salad, meat or fish dish, dessert. You have only one choice for each course, but there are lots of restaurants around, if the menu doesn’t inspire that night.
Everything is home-cooked. Everything. Local ingredients, often from the farmer’s markets, dominate. An example menu: vegetable soup (with lardons); green salad with sliced ham and cheese from the region (this is the land of the black pig of Bigorre!); pintade (guinea fowl) with mushrooms in a sauce and sliced carrots; finished with crème brulée. This is a good, old fashioned French Grandma’s Sunday dinner and is not only delicious, but copious. Reasonably priced beverages are also available.
We fell into a rhythm: sleep well, eat a hearty breakfast, hike (skip lunch!!!), relax at Les Bains du Rocher, eat a copious and delicious home-cooked meal, waddle to bed. Repeat. We only wished we had booked for a week! Hotel Lion d’Or is a home run!
Two day stay

Nice hotel near Centre of town. Comfortable and well run. Breakfast was adequate and our room very spacious. It is not a modern hotel but it has plenty of character. It is in the Centre of town and close to restaurants etc.
