Nice hotel,Shocking breakfast

Have stayed at Eastwood hall quite a few times over the years with no complaints, but for this stay I really felt I had to complain.
I will start by saying staff were mainly excellent, room was fine but the quality of the breakfast was shocking.
We paid nearly £30.00 for two relations to meet us for breakfast one day and were disgusted by some of the quality on offer.
For this price we would not expect tea & coffee to be dispensed from a machine with wooden sticks as spoons.
The budget bread for toast and the sausages were so cheap everyone on our table took one mouthful and left them on their plates.
I did complain to the duty manager who promised to send me a reply, but this was obviously not considered important to her as no reply was received.
As i say after all the previous enjoyable visits, the amount this hotel had gone downhill was really disappointing.

Overnight Treat

Booked a one night stay for last Sunday using a Groupon deal, for the price we really couldn't fault it.The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and has excellent leisure facilities which we were able to use before our check in time, the pool area is very warm and has a steam room and sauna. The 2 course meal included in the deal came from a menu with a varied choice, we both settled on the Turkey and cranberry scotch eggs followed by beef medallions on chive mash, the food was very good and was washed down with the chilled prosecco (also in the deal). Room was very warm, clean and had a view over the grounds. One small complaint is (much like many hotels) that the TV entertainment was appalling, only a handful of stations with very poor reception and set to the wrong region (London!), however an excellent free Wi;Fi signal compensated for this. Monday morning's buffet breakfast finished promptly at 9am, but the choice was again very good, with a help yourself hot drinks machine.
The nearby town of Eastwood is a short walk away, and although typical of being situated in a former mining community is trying to reinvent itself, the D.H Lawrence birthplace can be visited and there are a good selection of real ale pubs, including 3 or 4 micropubs (and a wetherspoons), we visited the 'Tap & Growler' and 'The Gamekeeper' both were very busy with excellent beer and atmosphere. On our way home we visited Newstead Abbey gardens (Abbey itself only opens on weekends in Winter), the sun was shining and the gardens are absolutely stunning.
Will definitely put Eastwood Hall on our list of places to stay again.

Wonderful grounds but..........

Stayed here overnight. Rooms dated, not 4 star standard. Was very very disappointed with the leisure facilities. The swimming pool was very dirty around the edge, The changing rooms very dirty, smelly and had obviously not been cleaned properly for a while. The floor tiling and dated wooden lockers should have been refurbished long ago. The drinks fountain in the gym was also very dirty.
I have stayed In a few four star hotels and if I had to compare, I would say this may be classed as a four star because of the facilities available, but unfortunately the cleaniness and the state of these are more in line with a two star hotel.
Is a shame about the rooms and leisure area, as the rest of hotel, particularly the restaurant, the grounds are fabulous, the staff lovely, but o my does it want sorting!

Not Quite There!

We purchased a package online which included an over night stay, a three course dinner with bottle of wine and full English breakfast.
The Pros
Breakfast was excellent with a large variety of options.
Service was good.
Dessert was very good.
WIFI was strong.

The Cons
The bed in our room was broken and had a very hard ridge on one side while being very soft in the middle.
There was a bar of soap in the bathroom which had been used and had makeup on it. There was a partially used shower gel in the shower.
The TV offered limited viewing and the reception was poor.
There was only one biscuit with the in-room tea/coffee selection, despite the room being booked for two. There was only one teaspoon.
There was only one bedside table- my fiance had to wedge a chair between the bed and wall as a substitute....
The starters were poor- my French onion soup did not have melted cheese on bread on the top as is customary, just a few croutons floating around in a very watery broth. The fishcake was mostly potato filler and of poor quality. My plaice was undercooked and raw in parts. The duck was just okay.
Would we return? No. I thought this online deal was too good to be true and it was. You get what you pay for.
