Coffee in the Gun Room

Popped in for a coffee and a snack. Beautiful surroundings, coffee and sandwiches well presented and reasonable value. The rare beef on ciabatta was particularly delicious. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Great house, patchy service, tired rooms

Doctor2017A on 16/06/2017 12:45

First impressions as you come up the drive are amazing. The main house is fantastic, and the grounds are wonderful. I've stayed here on a number of occasions for events and despite the initial good impression there are quite a few issues. Bedrooms in the main house are very well appointed, spacious and with lovely fixtures and fittings. The rooms in the other blocks are a bit pokey, and on my last trip I was put into the Cottage for a night. The decor there was 1980s school trip youth hostel, stained carpets, ugly bathroom fittings, shabby furniture: 'tired' is not the word. The breakfasts are fine, no complaints there, but there always seems to be a problem with the Sunday night meal, ranging from lack of vegetarian options to staff literally forgetting we were staying. The last time I stayed the main meal options both contained mushroom; when a friend asked staff about a mushroom-free option he was advised that he could 'pick the mushrooms out'. The previous trip, the meal was salmon and potatoes; vegetarians were advised that their option therefore was... potatoes. We rang Deliveroo. And finally, while the reception and waiting staff were mostly nice and friendly, would it hurt the bored bar staff to crack a smile as I hand over £9 for ONE glass of wine? In general: a mostly great venue if you are staying in the main house, but the cracks in the service really show if you are in one of the cramped and sometimes very tired outbuildings.

very dated

we stopped for one night in the honeymoon suite the decor was very dated, and there is a lot of very peculiar pictures on there walls and i mean very weird pictures. The food was very average in fact not value for the money they charge ,the portions was very meager . The music was quite loud in the restaurant struggling to have a conversation. the breakfast was like the premier inn except it was over cooked and looks like it was cooked at 6 o'clock not a great selection very poor indeed

Great location, nice room, but poor food choices!

MrsandMrJoner on 12/06/2017 13:52

A stunning hotel in a great location. Perfect (IMO) for weddings and conferences, but lacking that special touch for regular travellers. We stayed here a couple of nights in May, and unfortunately the food options are somewhat 'time warped' from a previous era. Although the quality was acceptable there was little to no choice for those with other dietary requirements, such as vegeterians, vegans or GF. The best chef could rustle up... was a side salad, chips or boiled potatoes. Very dissapointing when you are spending £180 per night for the room, and then £3.50 each for a ramekin full of chips & side salad. However, dont't be put off you are a meat eater and like a beefburger, or perhaps a tasty oxford sausage for your breakfast. Nice place, nice friendly staff, just felt you could do better when it comes to the food.

Overnight stay

Not only is the venue very impressive from the outside, the interior attractively co-joins traditional and modern architecture. Staff were helpful. Walks around the grounds reveal nooks and crannies to explore. One couple took a picnic in a far corner, making for a very English scene.
Only thing is - just check if a rowdy wedding is being held! A highly tattooed bride and groom and guests partied on into the wee small hours...and they were certainly not opera fans!! :0 We didn't make use of the pool, but it did look like a pleasant complex. Lifeguard in attendance. Birds, squirrels and bunnies were in abundance and it was a short trip to Blenheim Castle.
