An odd experience

Sally D on 18/11/2017 10:58

I visited as somewhere to stay whilst in Pontefract for work. Firstly the postcode on Google is wrong! My error because I should have checked the website first but ended up half an hour away on my first attempt!
When I arrived there was no one around and had to awkwardly wait until a lady appeared and showed me to my room- although friendly, she let me in, showed me where the light switch was, realised the bathroom light wasn’t working and said ‘oh sometimes it doesn’t work’ (?!) and then was about to leave until I asked about breakfast. I was told it was between about 6.30 & 9. And that was that.
No WiFi password so couldn’t access ‘free wifi’, had to use the loo in the dark, room very dated and walls are paper thin.
I planned to wake up to go for breakfast at 8ish,but it was more like 7.45- and the owner was cleaning things away & seemed surprised I was wanting breakfast and told me ‘I thought I’d done everyone’- with over an hour of breakfast time left?!
I also had to shower in the dark because the window in the bathroom gave no natural light & no light that worked.
Breakfast was ok, nothing special and instant coffee was yuk!!!
On the plus side, bed was very comfy and big and had a good nights sleep!
I chose to stay here because reviews were so good but I’m beginning to wonder if they went somewhere different!! Not sure how they won 3 in a bed either.
People who worked there were nice enough so I can’t fault them, just an odd & dated place to stay but cheap and you get what you pay for.
Would I return? Probably not.

Not a good experience

Stayed with my husband - attending an event in the area
First Visit:
Stayed at the Foxwood Gust House in the room overlooking the car park (fox on the door) - overall a good experience
Second visit:
Room 4 - very disappointing room rather musty - no tea making facilities in room - in dining area close by
- No Fire Actions Notice
- Holes in wall where possible a picture had hung in better times (or missing fire notice?)
- At 7.15 am no hot water left in the tank - was not able to shower - water was freezing cold. Soaped down in cold water and did my best to rinse with water from the sink which was warm. Was absolutely frozen - this just not an acceptable standard for a guest house
- On a positive note - the staff at breakfast were friendly and helpful and the food was alright, but my husband said the sausages were bland.
We will not be staying at the Foxwood again!

2 nights

The staff are really lovely. The place was cheap and good value for money. Unfortunately the bed was made from foam (not memory foam but just a huge chunk of regular foam) and this made it really uncomfortable as my body sank in while my legs stayed up! My husband also didn’t find it comfortable either. The artwork on the walls was funny once I’d noticed the additional part of the elephant’s anatomy.

Breakfast I had the sausage sandwich which arrived luke warm which felt like I was eating raw sausage (cheap sausages too, would have been better from a local butchers). Day 2 I had the bacon sandwich which was much better.

Overall, I would stay here again, it was clean and good value for money but I’d steer clear of the sausages at breakfast and perhaps take a camping roll mat to lie on so I don’t sink into the bed’s foamy abyss.

Our third visit but maybe our last

My wife & I have used Foxwood Guest House several times before but we think our last visit will be the last.
We travel up to the area regularly to visit my wife's family, sometimes staying overnight. Although we still believe it gives good value we are disappointed after the last stay.
Good points:- Good value, is clean, friendly staff & owners, with good size rooms & not a bad breakfast.
Bad points:-
The whole place needs decorating (just getting a little shabby)
Minor repairs need doing (window latches loose, exterior door lock loose)
Towels smelt fusty (towels been stored whilst still damp)
The worst thing was the mattress! Although it was a memory foam it had lost it's memory! Sagging & soft in the middle!
We are looking at alternatives for our next trip & yes maybe spending a bit more.

Needs Upgrading. Attention to detail.

A great location with beautiful views of the grounds..unfortunately the upkeep of the outdoors are neglected. I know autumn is upon us but a power wash of the patios would make it more presentable. The windows definitely needed a good clean.
Our room was No14 and very big however, this needs all minor repairs to be done. The coffee unit was not clean at all which included cups and spoons, had to wash them myself. Kettle had water left in it which is really a basic check..on turning back the duvet I noticed the top fitted sheet was inside out and I soon discovered why..dirty on the other side..bed uncomfortable..bedside units top came off..cracked sink..towel holder broke..mirrors needed a clean..very minor I know but batteries in TV remote need replacing.Again just basic checks. Now the best thing was the lovely breakfast served by two lovely ladies..thank you!
Would we stay again? Yes for the stunning view and location.
JUST NEEDS ATTENTION TO DETAIL.
ON A FINAL NOTE WAS ASKED TO PAY ON ARRIVAL EVEN THOUGH IT STATES IN THE INFORMATION BOOK PAY ON DEPARTURE!
