Had an excellent meal at the French Horn today for my wife a daughter’s joint birthday. It was our first visit and the service was truly excellent. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and that made our lunch very special. The views of the Thames from the conservatory are superb and the food was out of this world. I have no reservations about recommending this restaurant.

We have a special place on our hearts for this wonderful Hotel even though we visit rarely
We stayed here for our Honeymoon night, our 10th Wedding Anniversary and just recently our 20th
Each time we have stayed in the same room, one of the wonderful Cottages overlooking the river
We had a simply wonderful stay, the staff, as always, were lovely - warm, polite and efficient
We had a pre dinner drink in the bar where Ducks are roasting in front o the fire followed by a magnificent dinner
The food here is first class and we have never been disappointed
I cannot overstate just how special this Hotel is to us but even if i lift that veil form my eyes it I still highly recommend it

Sadly & surprisingly disappointing in many aspects: overhead "shower" was a pathetic dribble & only became warm by the time I'd finished; TV remote control missing - when one came, the batteries were dead; main part of the hotel was way overheated for time of year; WiFi internet connection inconsistent & feeble; offered complimentary newspaper didn't arrive by check-out time of 08:00; blanket-sized bathroom towel inappropriate for these environment-conscious times; breakfast feels like an inconvenience & a service they'd rather not offer (although food good) - needing to be pre-ordered & served in a small dark room with little capacity; English-speaking capability patchy amongst certain waiting staff.
Hotel location is spectacular but area let down by volume of commuter traffic passing through on workday mornings.

I have been going tot French Horn in Sonning for over 30 years ago. I popped in for lunch yesterday and was amazed at how the outstanding quality and service of the hotel and restaurant remains the same. So many places I visit rise like a meteor under pressures of getting good reviews, then crash into indifference when the novelty wears off. Not the French Horn. Michael the owner has been there for most of its life, but he also recruits a hugely enthusiastic staff of those who intend to make their career in catering, and think of no better place to start. Spend a couple of days is my advice. Stay in one of the little cottages fronting the most lovely stretch of the Thames you will ever see. Chat to the fishermen, than head over for an early drink and watch the ducks revolving on their spits by the open fire. Take the wife as I did. It's romance with a smile.

I first heard of the French Horn about 60 years ago from my mother - "a wonderful restaurant that roasts ducks in front of a log fire. It still does! My wife and I have been there many times and today celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary there. Wonderful location in beautiful gardens on a back water of the Thames. The menu offers everything a tradtitionalist could wish for and a few innovations as well. The service is immaculate and at just the right pace. Perfect!!
