This was my first shot at BBQ in California. They have what they call Tri-tip which is obviously brisket. I ordered a 2 meat dinner with the tri-tip and link. The tri-tip was book but had very very little smoke ring and was sliced almost paper thin making it cool quickly and almost always tough. They meat was not cooked long enough either but was done. The link was nothing special but was good. Sauces were typical of what you would find in a local market. All in all, it was alright but I have definitely had better
Great BBQ!

This place was close to my customer so we thought that we would give it a shot. The wait staff was amazing and extremely friendly. The food was great as well. Will definitely return when I am back in Bakersfield!
Excellent

Some of the best ribs I've had in a while. The Spicey BBQ sauce is great but the ribs are great without it. I had very good service and the people were friendly.
NOT WORTH IT IF IT'S AFTER 6:PM, OR MADE IT'S TO GO!

My family was a regular customer of Champs for years. The food has always been a bit overpriced, But it was good food, and apparently we thought it worth it in the end. But that's all changed. It's become quite clear that Champ's no longer seems to appreciate their take-out business. And, if it's anytime after 6:pm, the value verges on ridiculous. After the last go-order, it's been about a month now. It was so bad, I was actually offended at what we got, I called to speak to a manager, twice. I never received a call back. It was more than an hour before they closed, and saw even before entering the store that they already had chairs up on the tables. If I hadn't walked up to the door, I would easily have thought them closed. They did so with people still sitting their eating, very unprofessional. I would have been upset with them working to close up while my family was there eating, Apparently the staff was in a hurry to leave, a practice that no doubt costs the owners some business. They never greeted us. My son and I walked up to the counter, I said hi and we'd like to place an order to go. (Our orders are never less than $50.) The woman behind the counter said "we're out of......... and proceeded to read down several menu items. She didn't have enough tri-tip to fill the order, and no I couldn't sub with ribs because they were more expensive, and they didn't have a second choice. So she said she'd add more shredded pork. It was packaged separately, which was good because the better part of the weight in the container was the fat that settles to the bottom of the pot, and very little pork. She said I couldn't sub any other bread for the bread they were out of because again, price difference. They ultimately gave in to 4 not so fresh dinner rolls. She said they had no potatoes, after the order was "patched" together, she mentioned something about potato salad, which when I very nicely asked to substitute it for the potato they were out of, the waitress acted put out. I ordered a brownie, I only had to touch it and know it wasn't fresh and should never have been sold. Had the manager given us the courtesy of a call back, we might still be customers today. If you want really good deep-pit, try Jake's Tex-Mex on Oak St.
BBQ in Bakersfield

We are pretty discerning about our BBQ having sampled what is offered throughout the US. While this BBQ is not at the top of our list, it was surprisingly good for Bakersfield which is not known for its BBQ. They prepare the BBQ fresh daily and use real smoke as opposed to liquid smoke which earns high marks for us. The ribs we had were drier than I like. Definitely worth a try if you happen to be in Bakersfield and in the mood for BBQ.
