Just back from a weeks holiday in the Golden Bay Apartments. We had an amazing time. The staff couldn't have been nicer and the place was just perfect. A big thank you Joanna and Natasha for looking after us so well day and night :)...we miss you!! Food and drinks were great. We didn't do all inclusive but had breakfast and dinner a couple of times and the food was great and prices really reasonable. The area is nice, quiet but suited us just fine. The bus to Hersonissis or Heraklion is only about 12 minute walk so there are plenty of places to visit. We stroll into Kokkini Hani (the next big resort) lots of lovely shops and restaurants. We also went into Gato Kovues, again lots of restaurants and bars and shops. There are a couple of bars and restaurants in Gournes but when we were there it was very quiet (end of season) so the bars and restaurants were quiet but we didn't mind. We headed into one of the other resorts for the nights we wanted something a bit more lively. The apartments were lovely, clean and cleaned every day. We highly recommend Golden Bay, it was our first time in Crete but hopefully not our last and we would definitely return to Golden Bay.

We visited here close to the end of the season and we had a great time. The hotel is a little bit off the track at the end of a strip of restaurants and small apartment blocks so it is a bit of a walk into Gournes itself and the main supermarkets but there are smaller supermarkets close by where you can get the essentials. Whilst beer and wine are reasonably priced, spirits are quite expensive.
In the hotel again the beer and wine are reasonable but a Vodka and tonic for example is €6 and you don't really get large Spanish style measures
The staff are brilliant all round and all work really hard putting in 8-10 hours a day always with a smile on their faces and always happy to help.
The food in the hotel was really nice and reasonably priced from the snack bar food to the on site taverna we ate their most lunchtimes and quite a few evenings too. There are a couple of nice restaurants a few hundred metres down the coast as well.
The pool area is small but really nice and the bar and snack area are also really nice. The only issue I have is the music that is constant and although varied is quite loud. Occasionally they play some decent stuff but most of the time it's euro crap or Greek music. I am a music snob though so they would have had to go some to satisfy me 😂😂. We didn't bother with the Greek night as we had our fill of the music by the time this came around.
The rooms are all the same and a little basic but they are very good. Especially the shower rooms with really good showers. Please note that if you have small children there are no bathing facilities.
There are problems with mosquitos (I'm not blaming the hotel of course) but they could help perhaps by spraying the rom with insect repellent each day. I would recommend that you take some citronella candles if you want to sit out on your balcony on an evening. I went on a mosquito hunt each evening in the apartment and once I was sure a room was clear I sealed off the room by keeping all the windows closed and the door shut.
The room are quite basic and could do with some work surface in order to help prepare food and if the hotel could provide a small bottle of washing up liquid that would help so it is worth taking your own rather than having to buy any.
The main supermarkets are a good 30 minutes walk away and €10 in a taxi which is a bit steep but I guess if you are carrying heavy bags of shopping it is worth it.
Overall I would recommend going to this hotel and this area if you want a quiet holiday

Arrived 2200, Stella at reception checked us in very quickly even though there were several groups checking in together from our coach. Very friendly and welcoming. Shown to our room in a quite area, very clean and spacious for 5 adults. Throughout our stay everyone made us feel very welcome from the management down to the domestic staff they always smiled and said hello. Joanna at the pool bar remembered our names throughout our stay and was always smiling.
We stayed half board and the food was delicious, plenty choice to choose from on the menu, even cooked me pastitsio on the 2nd friday (not on menu), as we'd been to the greek night the 1st Friday (highly recommend). NEVER had problems with getting sunbeds in the morning (not silly early) in peak school holiday season. Lovely relaxing holiday even when we did walk to the bus stop and cash machine 😃

Had 2 fabulous weeks here Aug 2017. Very friendly staff, lovely welcome and always happy to help and please people. Iohanna is amazing, always bright cheery smile and lovely morning greeting. Rooms were very spacious and very clean, the maids do an excellent job. Yannis was very good looking after the pool and maintenance repairs. The food was excellent too. Greek night not to be missed. If looking for properly greek holiday would highly recommend. There is an excellent local butchers/deli about 10 minute walk away and bakers just a little further. There wasn't an awful lot of restaurants nearby to choose from but enough. Not many shops around but you can get the bus or taxi to large supermarkets nearby for 5-10 euros.
Would most definitely go back again. Thank you for our fabulous holiday.

golden bay hotel fantastic rooms are lovely and spacious bathroom one of the best in greece breakfast good english sausage nd bacon missed it most days the blackout curtains ensured we slept in after ten thirty every morning staff the best natasha joanna bar staff cant do enough for you cleaners did a great job lovely bar area most people had drinks there before and after returning on a nigh> some people stayed there all night cocktails 4 euro six thirty to nine thirty couple of nights we were in bed early no noise heard from bar and our room was above it ,spotless a credit to the owners
