Excellent Service - Overcrowded and dated hotel

The service received by every staff member we came across, The restaurant staff, to the concierge, the cleaners and anyone else we interacted with were all incredible.
The rooms are quite old and dated. They really need a refresh.
The pool and general facilities are excellent, but this hotel is very crowded.
Breakfast was ok, but after 5 days, was very sick of eating almost the same thing over and over again.
WiFi was ok

Spent 3 nights at the Golden Sands Resort and I must say that this is the most family oriented property that I have stayed in. For starters, please take the Fun Package if it is available. This would include daily entrance into the Adventure Zone for 2 hours. Most importantly it allows families to eat-in after a long day of fun! The service by the staff has been immaculate. Breakfast is always a test to see if the hotel F&B staff can cope, and I must say they did well despite running close to full-house. Food quality is good too. We never had to leave the hotel as we were told the food at Batu Ferringhi is either dodgy or tourist-priced unlike at Georgetown. Watching the sunset is a must to end the day. The kids love the pool with its slides and play area. Highly recommended!
Best Vacation ever

Outstanding everything was perfect. My family and I had the best holiday ever. My kids had a great time at the water slides and the Adventure Zone. Everyone at the hotel was very nice and was always willing to help. They anticipated all our needs and breakfast at the hotel was excellent with the special touches. I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone planning to visit Penang.

Having arrived about midday we were offered a soft drink and sat in a well air conditioned room paprerwork was quick as we,d stayed here before 5 years ago.We were given a sea view 3rd floor, room nice and clean,Great! afew extras ice machine by the lift on all floors, I didn't know that the hotel was running a budget break,as the weekend went by I could not beleave the noise coming from different level balconies
by the occupants, and to top it all we have children running and screaming along the
corridors well past nine oclock at night, however come Tuesday peace returns to the floors and to the swimming pool.Breakfast is a joke over the weekends, free for all on the food along with the waste left on the tables,my advise eat early get to know your floor managers to get you a table away from the windows and sparrows looking for a feebe meal,I found Vijayan Subramaniam, the most caring polite manager to this Hotel, and for your Lattes in the morning look out for babul khan mia he will clear your table and look after your needs well done to you both and to all the breakfast staff,I would like to say to the management if you've got long team guest why can,t you reserve some seats at the bottom half of the meal area,I also would like to Thankyou for the Birthday cake that I received at breakfast time,I would say to anybody staying for longer than a week, move to the six or seventh floor as you will not get your rest and that's what l thought this Hotel was all about,l shall return but not to the low level rooms.
Frustrating and disappointing experience.

This is my third visit to the highly recommended Golden Sands Resort by "Shangri-La" and by far the worst experience among all other visits. Being branded "by Shangri-La" is a disappointment being compared to all other hotels owned by Shangri-La. The staffs used to be courteous and helpful, but all changed during my last visit.
After a very long drive from Kuala Lumpur to attend a wedding at Golden Sands Resort, I was looking forward to the warm welcome by Shangri-La staffs. Unfortunately, upon arrival I was greeted by fumes from buses parked at the main entrance with the engine running. Then, parking was a nightmare as there were insufficient parking lots allocated for guests. I was then redirected by an extremely rude security officer to park at the next property at their Rasa Sayang Resort and was assured that my pregnant would be fetched to the property by one of their buggies. Unfortunately, it was no where to be found and I had to drive her back to the main property and went on to park my car.
Then while I was checking-in which took almost an hour, Josephine from front desk told me my room was not ready and it still needs to be checked by their supervisor/manager. Although the advertised check-in time is anytime after 2PM, it was in the evening that time somewhere between 5.30PM to 6.00PM and the room was still not ready. The hotel should have charged me half of the rate that I was paying if I can only check-in in the evening. As I was sitting at the waiting area, I noticed all other tourists could check-in smoothly. It may be that priority was given to tourists and not locals.
Apparently, the supervisor/manager did not do a good job as after their "thorough" inspection I still found some trash in the bathtub and also a missing floor mat. Air-conditioner was barely cold as well, I've set to the minimum and it the walkway was much cooler, should have just left the door open to cool my room.
When I was leaving the property to attend an event, I've requested the security officer to request for a buggy to fetch my wife to the car. I was then being "instructed" to stand aside and wait while he continues day dreaming so as the next guest who requested a buggy. I then had to walk to the car and drive back to the main entrance to pick my wife.
Breakfast as reviewed by other guests, was a long queue which I did not bother to wait. On a side note, Josephine(front desk) did not brief me on the time, venue and availability of breakfast during check-in. Obviously, the hotel does not have the capability to cater for that many guests.
On a side note, many guests that took a swim walked around the property and made the floor very slippery and also in the lift. It is very dangerous to walk around especially if your pregnant or an elderly, please beware. I've stayed at numerous hotels in Penang and this is by far the most disappointing and frustrating one. I would gladly recommend a handful of hotels for your consideration be it at Ferringhi, Gurney or Georgetown but I would avoid this particular property.
Initially, I've wanted to send an email to Shangri-La group but after some consideration I've given up to give a feedback to them. In a nutshell, I'm solely offering my honest opinion to avoid consumers being disappointed by the "by Shangri-La" branding.
