Charming guesthouse near Hillsborough

A charming guesthouse, less than 10 min walk from Hillsborough centre, and with good bus connection, at least during day time. There are rooms in the main building and cottages in the spacious garden. We stayed in a 2-bedroom suit in the main building: this arrangement suited our family size perfectly. We had a mini fridge and a kettle. WiFi was included, but weak in the master bedroom.
In an attempt to save water, our toilet had a foot lever releasing a minimal water flush only, similar to European train toilets in the 60s and 70s. Waste seemed to go straight into a septic tank: there was no U-tube with a water lock. As a result, the toilet/bathroom was somewhat smelly. The lack of standing water in the toilet bowl did not seem to prevent mosquitoes from breeding (somewhere) in the bathroom, but we had no insect problem in the bedrooms, with the fans running at night.
The common area has books and comfy chairs. We had the room next to that area, but there was no noise disturbance at night, although there were other guests next to us. We did, however, suggest heavier blinds or curtains for our rooms’ windows, as the light from that area penetrated one of the bedrooms. The veranda light, which can only be controlled from the common area, shone into the other bedroom. Hotel management was grateful for our suggestions, so I think they will improve this aspect.
European-style continental breakfast was included in the price. It was served in an up-stairs veranda with a spectacular view. We liked to sit up there in the afternoons too, just for these views. The Green Roof Inn also serves dinner (except Mondays), but no lunch. The dinner menu is, understandably, limited. Food was delicious, but pricey. You are allowed to bring your own wine, which helped offset the dinner cost.
Staff recommended their beach restaurant in Hillsborough “La Playa” for lunch – see separate review. Just to say that La Playa is just as far or close as other nearby options.
A staircase from the garden to the sea provides access to the water, but there is no beach. The rocky waters looked inviting for snorkelling, but the water turned out to be more turbid than we had thought. There were also many white sea urchins.
Overall, a pleasant stay in a tasteful guesthouse
Not for us

A very pleasant place , we arrived to a tropical strom , we were left alone in the hotel. Though were given two lanterns powered by tea lights in case the power went down .
We knew there was no air conditioning and mosquito nets however it was so uncomfortable and even with so much bug resistance products we could not cope with the amount of insect bites.
We felt quite vulnerable as we were the only people in the hotel.
We had popped over from Grenada for 3 nights but stayed only one . Just did not suit us .

Lovely stay at the Green Roof Inn, slightly out of town and on a hill so get a wonderful Caribbean breeze. Rooms can get a little buggy so bring some spay. Food delicious as was the rum, the staff were very friendly and check out the Fidel Castro cocktail yum.
Nice Ambiance

This restaurant looks shut as you enter it through a gate. However once you ascertain the opening hours it is well worth a visit. Again probably this and The Roundhouse are two of the best restaurants on the Island. You are by the sea but unfortunately this was not lit up at night so worth a visit during the day if they are open! Nice surroundings and great food.
