Yes it is 20 min from the strip, yes it is a much better place to be.
We had stayed here several years ago and really enjoyed it. We found a great deal and were excited to stay here again.
Checkin in wasn't very good. The actual checkin part was fine, just had to wait a few minutes. We got to our room and had a few issues. The hot water wouldn't work, air conditioning wasn't working properly etc. We tried to bear with it, but the next day we called again and they were able to fix the few issues. Not a big deal for us. The room was large and well enough appointed, maybe getting a little older though.
Several good restaurants on the resort, we ate the cafe a couple of times as they had a couple of incredible specials and service was good. The food court was also handy with some good selections.
The pool area was real nice. A small little neat beach area, comfy chairs and good service for food and drinks. We also enjoyed a very nice gym and some time in the spa.
There is a nice retail area with several other restaurants within walking distance.

This is our second 3 night stay at GVR. This time we stayed at Tropicana for two nights (for the Las Vegas Marathon) and then headed to GVR for three more nights. Here are my thoughts:
-GVR's property was developed where land isn't quite so expensive. Therefore, compared to the strip, the property is expansive. The rooms are large, the outdoor areas are awesome. Nothing is jammed in.
-Compared to the strip there is room to breathe. I get sick of wall to wall people on the sidewalks and in the Strip resorts. (I also get sick of all those hawkers that heckle you on the strip. I don't want a hooker, a dance club ticket, or a timeshare).
-$5 Blackjack tables can be found with traditional odds. The new trend of 6-5 Blackjack odds for mid-strip $5 and $10 games blows.
-The rooms are big and very nice. Not Wynn nice, but better than most strip hotels. (In order of room quality alone we've stayed at Wynn, Venetian, Vdara, GVR, Caesars, Delano, Signature, Tropicana, Paris, TI, Bally's, and Circus Circus). The room is as big or bigger than all of those except perhaps Venetian.
-The restaurants, specials offers, and the attached District shopping area are all really nice. Prices are what you'd find in a typical suburban area and better than what you get charged on the strip.
-The property (pool, gaming, fitness area, movie theater) is amongst my favorites in Vegas.
-Rent a car if you are staying here. It's an easy 10 minute drive to the strip. If you don't rent a car you can't walk to any other gaming facility.
-Ask for specials in the Grand Cafe. Very nice diner.. generally with killer specials. You'll never find those specials on the menu or table tents.
My biggest beef? Their players club card awards points/tiers that expire in six months. I get this for locals. I don't get this when I'm coming from Michigan. They are almost encouraging me to go try something else when I return each year.

The Green Valley Ranch Resort and Spa is a Fantastic Stay right outside Las Vegas. {15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic}. We ate at the buffet and the cafe, both were good and reasonably priced. Rooms are a little pricey but are worth it due to how nice the overall property. Poker players..the casino has a nice room.

We were disappointed with the "resort fee". Really??? What a scam for additional $$.
If you want to participate in the resort spa for $ fine but staying 1 night, checking in at 3pm and checking out at 11 am next day. Pool isn't even heated...such a beautiful place with cheesy extra costs for folks who do not want use of the "extras".

Excellent accommodations with everything you need right there. Multiple restaurants, a spa, large fitness center, outdoor common area, casino, etc.
Only problem was they charged me $12.99 for wifi and I spent an hour at the airport waiting for the shuttle. Missed the shuttle because I was told to look for a red bus. Turns out the hotel only has white buses and they are poorly labeled. The hotel did make it right by allowing me an early check-in, upgrading my room, and adjusting the wifi and cost of the cab off my bill.
