What People are saying

Honeymoon

Ameera Aon 14/08/2017 16:50

Quaint decor and rooms made for a delightful honeymoon stay. The staff was friendly as well as the service. Had a breakfast in bed for the first morning and it was full service with fruits followed by a full course meal. The buffet style breakfast the following morning had an excellent array of choices for vegetarianz as well as meat livers. The pool had a nice private atmosphere. The view of the room overlooking the beach was comfortable.and also very romantic.

A little dated but if you like a rustic charm...

The location is nice and the staff are very friendly, but it could use a little updating for the price we paid (We stayed just after New Year's so I'm not sure if that's an expensive part of the season). The rooms are fine, the bed is comfy and the wifi is acceptable. I personally like the unpolished look as long as its clean, which it is. I especially liked the large private deck we had overlooking the ocean. The pool is okay but it is looking a little tired. The walk to town is about 15-20 minutes but be careful as the road is not very pedestrian friendly. The beach bar is nice and the beach, although small, is nice as well. Probably the nicest restaurant that we found is the one across the street but fair warning, it's not cheap. I would selectively recommend this to those that don't prefer the Hilton or Sandals type resorts.

Taxi service

Carried some really charming and exciting guests to this beautiful hotel. They enjoyed their stay there. It was a refreshing change of all the hustle and bustle. The view is exquisite and its a breath of fresh air

This place is gross

Fabianswayon 02/04/2017 23:44

Okay, this will be a pretty lengthy review, but it will behoove you to read this before you stay here. As I was staying here, I was taking notes, and here they are.

1. THE HOTEL IS NOT ON THE BEACH! They have a sister property across the street, which has beach access, but this hotel is not on the beach.
2. Parking is awful.
3. The phone in the room didn't work. So, any time I had an issue, I had to go search for someone to assist me.
4. There isn't ever anyone at the front desk. If you're looking for help, good luck, no one is ever at the front desk. I had a million complaints, and each time, I had to go searching for someone. There were a few times, I had to go to my room, and wait an hour and go looking again for the front desk person
5. Dirty/ Peeling walls. I'll attach pictures to this review, but the walls are disgusting. The paint is peeling and there are random brown large spots, and what appears to be water damage or mildew.
6. I'm not sure what filters they used for the website, or hotels.com, but please do not believe the pictures. They pictures are the worst representation of what you actually receive.
7. They dont have face towels.
8. For the majority of my stay, the tv didn't show a picture - it said "audio only". When I went down to have it fixed, there was no one to be found.
9. I can deal with a firm bed, but this bed felt like I was sleeping on bricks.
10. The furniture is stained and ripped. It makes it very hard to comfortably sit on a chair that has a big gross stain, and its ripped in more than one place.
11. All the outlets are being used by their appliances, so good luck trying to charge your phone/ laptop/ tablet, without unplugging the cable box, or refrigerator.
12. Wifi! They dont have wifi! I'm guessing they use the same wifi as the property across the street, but the signal is definitely not strong enough to make it to this property. I tried writing this review while I was there, but the wifi wouldn't connect. When I asked one of the staff in the restaurant (I couldnt find the lady at the front desk) she said the wifi is always like that.
13. I tried to open the curtains and the entire rod fell off. It's not secured, and impossible to open the curtains without the whole rod falling on you.
14. After a day without charging my phone/ comp, someone promised me an extension chord. I'm sure you can tell, it never came.
15. The restaurant was grossly over priced, for average food.
16. Ants everywhere. I get this is a tropical location, but there were ants all over the room and bathroom.
17. Unsanitary leather (I think) toilet seat. I don't see how they can adequately clean those.

Shabby not chic

richardemailon 22/02/2017 20:52

We stayed here for two weeks in a junior penthouse suite. From the outside, the hotel is appealing, and something different from the usual bland hotel complex. Our room was spacious, with a good view of the sea, and Scarborough in the distance. The hotel is in easy walking distance of Scarborough along a lit road (although there are no pavements initially) and a couple of local restaurants in Scarborough that are well worth visiting (Salsa Kitchen, Blue Crab, Ciao Pizza). There are local shops and supermarkets in Scarborough and a small shop down the road from the hotel for water, etc. The hotel has its own pool, which is quiet, and you get access to the pools and facilities of the Bacolet Beach Club. Breakfast is in the Club Havana restaurant across the road. There are major building works at Bacolet Beach Club while a new wing is being built but this was not intrusive or noisy during our stay.

BUT

The rooms in the Half Moon Blue are shabby not chic and in desperate need of attention. Our bed was ready to collapse and the balcony furniture had exposed, rusty nails, the shower blocked, the toilet flush was faulty, various lights did not work and were not repaired despite our request and there were bats nesting in the balcony roof, as well as numerous other minor maintenance issues (some of which we resorted to fixing ourselves). House keeping is superficial and inconsistent and we saw no sign of cleaning of the common parts during our stay.

There are two main bars/restaurants on site, Da Rum Shop in the Half Moon Blue Hotel, and Club Havana in the Bacolet Beach Club. These are very different places, Da Rum Shop offering mainly pizza and roti, mostly with chips, and Club Havana purporting to offer fine dining. Breakfast in the Club Havana was ok, but dinner in either restaurant was poor quality (to the point of inedible in Da Rum Shop), with indifferent service and over priced. Also both venues, but especially Club Havana, are in desperate need of a deep clean.

The Rum Bar begins playing music from late afternoon, five days a week, and hosts a club night until 1am on Thursdays. This means deep, thudding base throughout the Half Moon Blue Hotel for the duration.

Our most serious concern involved taxis. As we understand, on Tobago these have a licence plate starting with 'H' meaning they are licensed and insured for hire. Asking reception to book us a taxi on two occasions resulted in a driver and car that was not a taxi but was the hotel maintenance man in a hotel car (not licensed and presumably not insured and illegal). As soon as we realised what was happening we hired a professional taxi driver for the remainder of our stay.

There were a lot of biting insects and no attempt to spray the grounds.

There were a few brighter moments but overall service was indifferent bordering on unfriendly and off putting and probably the worst greeting on check out we have ever experienced, with no attempt at a smile or conversation.

Lots of room for improvement and we concluded that the hotel must be being run down. This would be a shame because with renovation, cleaning and improved service this place could still be a gem.
