Had a meal Friday night , the service was very good the meal was excellent. The menu is pub style but higher end pub style well presented and good portions. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Also the Mojotos went down well with my wife. This place seems to be on the up.
Night at the Museum

I stayed here on the way to Durham. It's a beautiful and historic house in a beautiful place. Unfortunately it's also a really good reminder of what British hotels were like in the 1970s and 1980s. Readers of Bill Bryson will know what I mean. Interesting? Certainly. Comfortable? No. the public rooms are interesting and 'in-period', even spectacular, but the bedrooms are a long way below what you might expect from a modern hotel.
In its favour it has stayed true to the age and style of the building: there's no sense of the ubiquitous characterless hotels you find the world over. Travelodge it ain't. But it might make you nostalgic for the comforts you've got rather used to in the large chains of convenient 'in-and-out' quick stop hotels. Horses for courses, I suppose.
Quirky

The hotel is large, owner-occupied and run with a skeleton staff. Much of the maintenance work has been done in-house over the years and it is beginning to need renewing. Our room had been refurbished using a fairly broad-brush approach to decorating, and the shower did not work.
We stayed here twice, one night on a journey north, and three nights on the way back. The owners were very kind to us because I was poorly on the drive back and we were able to stay on for an extra night. There are many personal touches like a teddy bear in the room and some beautiful drapes on the walls of the bedroom.
The hotel is spacious and shows off the styles of it owners, and is very different to the typical modern chain. It will be too quirky for many tastes, and falls rather short of the standards of the typical independent establishment.
The hotel is let down by it dinner menu, where the food is overpriced for the quality and quantity.

Superb hotel, Anne & David are very warm and friendly and passionate about their home, and welcome you into it with open arms. As a family with a young child we were slightly aprehensive about staying at such a lovely place, but we were pleasantly surprised. We had an amazing family room and at meal times were greated with a highchair already placed and even childrens cutlery to use. Will be staying again. Thank you for an amazing few days.
An elegant hotel with poor food

This grand, mainly Georgian, building has been decorated in a traditional and elegant style. There are many original features - fireplaces, a Portland stone cantilevered staircase, coving, etc. It is spacious and had everything we needed, including lovely views over the ground. It was, however, very cold; the heating was not turned on until quite late in the day and it takes a long time for the rooms to heat up. The breakfast was OK (although fresh orange juice and stronger coffee would have been welcome) but the dinner was very disappointing. The food is certainly not haute cuisine - just about passable, I would say. The place needs a more upmarket chef and more staff in general. The few young foreign staff were very hardworking and enthusiatic, though. One very good thing about the hotel is that there is no music anywhere. On balance we paid a lot for this hotel and we felt it is way overpriced.
