A construction site

This is the only negative review I’ve ever made on TA. We had been looking forward to this accommodation for some months - it’s well above our usual budget but we were splashing out for a special occasion. When we arrived, we were disappointed to see that the resort is still under new construction, and our chalet was right next to a construction site. When we drove back around to ask the woman on the desk whether the construction was going to continue over the days we were there, she confirmed that it was. She was very helpful and agreed to an immediate cancellation. Of course, then we were stuck in Cromwell without another option - luckily we were able to find a nicer place in Wanaka.
Do be aware, this resort is part of a weird new subdivision, so it’s not isolated or remote - there were lots of new houses being built, kids hooning around on BMX bikes, and other assorted noise (in addition to the construction).
Avoid

In a nutshell: Avoid, for two thirds of the price you get a lovely B&B with views out on an orchard just down the road.
Short version: We spent two months traveling at the beginning of the year and this one was the worst of all the 20plus places we stayed in. We stayed in 24b, an upstairs room that had some nice views to one side, where you could see a mountain range.
This is not a hotel because there are no services provided (to contact reception you have to track around one arm of the artificial lagoon as there is no phone in the room).
It is not a resort because there are no facilities (every backpacker offers a communal washing machine, so I am disregarding that as a facility).
It is not a motel because there isn’t even off street parking for half the units.
This is a collection of privately owned holiday units that are rented out when not used by the owners. The style of our particular unit felt neither welcoming nor comfortable, everything was slightly scuffed, dark grey or black, think abandoned bachelor pad.
There is nothing ‘Boutique’ about it but the price, a dozen units around a public waterway make no boutique destination. Even the ‘heritage’ is a bit far fetched when some of the units haven’t even been built yet. The advertising is grossly misleading.
I also have no doubt that management will attack me for writing this, another no go when you provide no service for customers and make no effort to contact your customers when they request to talk to you while they are staying with you.
Sleep quality was zilch because the bed was too hard for comfort; it was impossible to sleep with windows open (no insect screens) and the air con was whining too loudly to be ignored. There were no facilities on site that a cheap backpackers wouldn’t provide. I have read responses to critical reviews here and I am sure the management will come back with more of the same. We left a three page hand written letter for the owners just when we were leaving and 8 months later are still waiting for a reply. We are not holding our breath.
Need to know more, here is the list:
- hard mattress and pillows
- whiny and loud air conditioning (on the lowest setting) and no fly screens on the windows, so opening a window over night was not possible
- one sofa but no chairs to sit on (two abandoned bar stools were standing against one wall with no conceivable use because the sofa was rammed up against the bit of counter top that might or might not have been a breakfast bar)
- no sun shading on the balcony which was unusable from noontime onwards. No alternative anywhere on the premises, so I sat out front on the public footpath/car park as the room was too hot to sit in even with the aircon running and too dark because the curtains had to be fully drawn against the sun, again, no sun shading and curtains are black so absorb the heat when drawn)
- small average TV screen that was a bit too small to watch from sofa or bed
- no reading lamps, 28 watt in the bedside lamps (with dark opaque lamp shades) functioned just above night light level
- six very bright down lighters provided light, if you like sitting in a glare that would light up a window display (which you are because everyone from across the marina can see into your room, as well as anybody boating on the public lake arm in front of your window)
- everything is made of plastic, even the sheets are half polyester, so beware of electric shocks most of the time you touch anything made of metal
- there are no facilities on site (if you exclude the availability of a communal washing machine); the restaurant next to reception has no association with the rooms and offered nothing if you want some healthy choices
- any question about facilities or services has the same answer: down the road in Chromwell
- there is no room service, no lounge, no spa (I don’t mean the bathtub variety), no privacy (the units across are all equally open and everyone looks in on everybody’s business) and no secure on site parking.
- there is also a building site right beside the cabins/rooms because units are not finished yet are still being built (February 2017).
- the public marina around which the units are built is also frequented by curious boat owner who drift in and out to have a look at you while you are in your room or on your balcony; at times I felt as if I was the attraction in a zoo (counted 12 boats til noon when the sun started to hit the balcony/room and it got to hot to use either).
The only good thing about this place are some of the (hopelessly unequipped) staff who seem to have no training at all in hospitality but just try very hard to help despite the miserable product they have to work with. Laura at reception really tried to help. So was the cleaning staff who couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating. We never saw a manager around although we asked for him several times and were told he was somewhere on the premises. He never bothered to contact us back to us about our questions or complaints.
Very pleasant

We stayed here with families it and friends for a wedding. This has got to be my new favourite place in Cromwell! We had a ground level room with spa and sauna and it was amazing.
Will definitely stay here again.
Stunning outlook for a new location

Arriving late afternoon, it was an efficient and simple check in. The friendly and quality staff helped direct me to my unit and I returned to the bar for dinner.
Blue Cod on the menu was an instant attraction for this North Island based traveller. A glass of local wine and efficient delivery of my main meal was welcomed by this lone traveller. Highly recommend this as somewhere not just for the adventure tourist.
Business, pleasure, or any special Occassion.
