    What People are saying

Would not give this place even one star.

    PhilReeves on 11/10/2014 03:37

I've given this place one star, but only because it's the only option open to me. I can honestly say this is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. The whole place smells of damp and is very dirty. I stayed in Room 5 which was extremely basic. Spent two nights there being severely bitten on my hands and feet by bed bugs which has kept me awake for two nights on the trot. DO NOT EVER STAY AT THIS HOTEL.

    Family in mind.

The Hero of Aliwal was a last minute choice for us us our accommodation fell through elsewhere. We called ahead first of all to check availability & to to discuss our requirements. Don't get me wrong, we're not a fussy bunch, just wanted them to be aware that we were coming with a two year old & not everyone likes children!
Barry was really helpful, even opening earlier when we arrived much earlier than we had arranged.
From the outside it looks a little run down, but in the village there is stiff B&B competition, but the price we paid was very reasonable for a triple room. As others have said the macerate was a little noisy when the toilet was flushed, but that not really a problem.
Whilst the room were dated & basic, it was ideal for our needs & budget. The beds were really comfortable. We brought our own ready bed for our daughter & there was plenty of room for it in the room too.
After a great nights sleep, we were all ready for breakfast. This was one of the perks of the stay. Great bacon, sausages, toast, beans tomato, mushrooms, eggs etc. Everything you'd expected of the customary Full English breakfast along with plentiful refills of tea & coffee & juice too. The staff really indulged our daughter at what any parent might consider a nightmare scenario, breakfast in a strange place. They made a great fuss & treated her as if she was really grown up, made a great start to the day.
For those who like to know more about the village, ask Barry or the staff about the history. You'd be surprised at the Military significance of Whittlesey & how the B&B got its name. We were chatting for ages about local points of interest, where to walk, what to see etc.
Following the directions given to us we took a lovely walk along the canal a minute from the B&B. Loads to see. Assorted ducks, moorhens, swans & even a stalking heron in the reed bed.a privilege for us was the thrill of emerald & blue when we spotted a kingfisher zipping past us & stopping across the water in a low branch. Much to our daughters excitement!
In short our stay was lovely & we'd like to thank the team for all they did. They made it feel like we were staying with family, not a B&B. Cheers

    Worst B and B ever

    Jan871 on 05/10/2014 15:07

Absolutely awful B and B. Shared bathroom was disgusting, mouldy, dirty toilet, wet towels on the floor all night., wash basin filthy. Couldn't face cleaning my teeth in there, as it was so bad. My room had a shower with the sign "please do not urinate in the shower, it is not pleasant for the next guest." This may be, because the only toilet between 7 guests, is in the shared bathroom.
No real ales or meals available.
However, only £28 a night for a single room, my bedroom was clean and basically furnished, there was a good breakfast and I did have a shower!
    Would definitely not recommend!

    worst hotel ever stayed in

    garylloyd1972 on 18/06/2014 17:31

whilst working around the uk myself and two colleagues got a family room. ripped off at paying £90.
worst nights sleep ever. bed sheets were dirty, shower didn't work. no hot water. tap wouldn't turn off so macerator was running all night. best of all the toilet seat was broke.
actually saw bugs crawling on the bed. carpets were dirty and damp.
mold on the walls and on the bed clothes.
unfortunately after being on the road for 18 hours I needed some sleep so had to stay.
woke up at 4am didn't want to eat or shower so left in a rush at 6am. nobody around to have a word with. been living on pain killers all next day as the bed was so uncomfortable.
DO NOT STAY HERE. if my van wasn't full I would have slept in there.
windows were covered with trees outside so definitely not a room with a view.
    bedclothes were for the sixties.
could go on all night slagging the place off
