A quiet relaxing escape in the midst of a bustling city

We had the wonderful opportunity to make a reservation for a night in Hiiragiya and it indeed remains a memorable venue to stay. While the price itself remains on the high end, with the quality of meals, service and accomodation, I would gladly pay for such an exquisite place.
During our visit in May, we managed to make a booking for a room in the old wing of the building. This came with a garden view which gave off an absolutely peaceful ambience. Upon arrival, the management assisted me to my room and while walking, you could see that there is heritage within this place. The room itself was well equipped with the necessities and proved to be very comfortable. Unbeknownst to us, the room that they had placed us was a room that a Japanese Nobel Laureate for literature often resided in. You can see and read the much vibrant and rich history of the room itself.
In the evening and breakfast the next day, meals were prepared exquisitely and ticked every box of ours with much satisfaction. We enjoyed the kaiseki meal that was prepared with much delicateness and finesse.
Yasunari Kawabata once said, “When I’m staying at Hiiragiya and watching the intermittent rain of late autumn, or the rainy season of early summer, I feel the serenity of old Japan”
It was a wonderful experience and I hope to return some day to the beautiful location and its thoughtful staff. I cannot strongly emphasise that any further
Supreme hospitality

The last two nights of our journey through Japan were to be a highlight by staying in Hiiragyra ryokan. Our expectations were surpassed. Very personal hospitality, the beauty of an old Japanese building, and exquisite Japanese food served in a traditional way, all created a unique experience we will never forget.
One of the Greatest Hotels in the World

The Hiiragiya Ryokan is one of the greatest hotels in the world. Rooms and garden are exquisite. All modern fixtures in a classic Japanese country inn (now in the middle of a city). Modern plumbing and air conditioning. When we wanted Western chairs they were there in a minute. One gracious maid served us our meals in our room.
Food was extraordinarily good. So different from the food in Japanese restaurants in the US, even great ones like Nobu.
Really something

This was our first time in ryokan and we were quite blown away. Service was exceptional, especially during the dinner. Staff spoke quite good english.
Very memorable experience to have the kaiseki dinner in the room at tatami mat, dressed in yukata's. Sake at the dinner was reasonable priced, which is a plus.
You can sense the history in this place. It's definately worth the cost.
Extraordinary meals and beautiful room

Make it if you want tradition and beauty, make it if you want perfect hotel services, japanese kaiseki meals and breakfasts. They took care of us like family members, suggested us to enjoy the tea ceremony in the best place in Kyoto, they found a wonderful honsen wich accepts tattoos...and more...
We've got only one life.
Beware, our traditional room in the "old Wing" was a bit noisy because of street traffic. So, if a complete silence is important for you like it is for us, don't choose the traditional rooms and prefer the new rooms or, like us, take/buy earplugs before and enjoy Hiiragiya treasures, as it was built 200 years ago.
