Clean hotel. Functional hotel

This holiday inn express delivers exactly what you would want in a Holiday Inn express. Check in was easy. Breakfast is standard american food fare -- yogurt, cereal, orange juice, etc. Price was reasonable. The bed was actually quite comfortable. Interestingly for a hotel so close to the border where people are carrying passports, there is no safe in the room.
Best in Calexico

Our company has been staying at this location for the past 19 years, with over 600 total overnight stays. We would not be coming back this often if this were not the best hotel in the area. Great breakfasts, nice rooms, fantastic staff. Easy on/off to highway 111, quick access to 'downtown' Calexico and the rest of Imperial county.
Calexico Visit

Unfortunately our visit was not for a vacation. We booked at the Holiday Inn Express as it seemed like one of the nicer places to stay in the area. Besides our first attempt to check in, we were not disappointed.
When we initially arrived about 1 pm on Thursday 05/11/17 the gentleman at the counter was very rude and seemed almost bothered by the fact that we wanted to check in early. Mind you I noted it on my reservation that we wanted to check in early. We left at 3 am and drove for 10 hours so we really need our room early. He immediately said no rooms were ready, and when I kindly asked a second time if he could just check in his computer as we were exhausted from our drive and really needed to get some rest before funeral services. He just pointed at the counter and rudely stated that check out was at 11 am and as we could see he was just getting everything prepared and to come back after 3pm. What were we supposed to do for 2 hours? Nevertheless even though my husband suggested we look for other accommodations, we went had lunch and picked up a few items for our children to snack on.
When we came back we were greeted by a completely different individual who was more than happy to help us. He got us all check in and explained the wifi login, breakfast and pool times. He directed us to where we could find our room 314. Top floor just as we requested the room's AC was already on so it was cool when we walked in. Very spacious and clean. When we realized there was no Microwave, the gentleman at the front desk quickly brought it up to us and hooked it up. We were a little bummed that we didn't get to use the pool Thursday night 5/11/17 as there were a lot of motorcyclist using the pool as there drinking area. The next morning when we went to have breakfast and I must say that there food is good. They had sausage, ham, egg white omelets, scrambled eggs and all the other traditional quick breakfast items. Carmen who takes care of the breakfast area was amazing. Greeting us every morning and talking with us. She was very accommodating and making us feel welcomed and even like at home.
Everything went well with our stay and the staff was all very helpful meeting all of our needs and answering questions. They were all a glimmer of sunshine during this difficult time for our family.
Truly Excellent Hotel Experience, plus Carmen

For background, I am a IHG, Holiday Inn Spire member, the highest category of traveler, for those unaware. I live in hotels as a travelling author. And, I have just completed a 30 day stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Calexico. The greatest compliment is my wish/desire that I could stay longer. Every staff member from the manager, to the breakfast staff, to the maintenance people to the breakfast staff were outstanding, and super friendly, compassionate and empathetic, as each member seemed to try to outdo the others in extending hospitality and help on a daily basis, and isn't that what we, travelers are all about, getting help, wether its something in our rooms, breakfast, or extras at the desk such as a bottle of water, recommendations on what is available in the area, very important here, as it often pertains to what is across the border in Mexico, not just another foreign country such as Canada, but one that might have some fearful aspects based on rumor and reputation.
This staff took care of all of this. In particular, three persons deserve special recognition, with the proviso that every one of the staff is worthy of commendation, thus giving kudos to the hiring process.
First, I would like to commend two front desk clerks, with whom, with a long stay such as mine,is in constant touch.
Thus, kassandra was my main contact, and Kassandra served as a first rate concierge as at the best hotels, and was invaluable to me in so many ways, especially in my sojourns into Mexico. Right behind her, was Manny, with maybe the only reason a step behind Kassandra was the shift he worked. Again, his help and local expertise was very important to my stay.
However, as my title indicates, I had the good fortune to meet one of the most outstanding hotel employes in over 50 years of travel, in the person of the breakfast lady, named Carmen. If she were not rooted here, I might have tried to take her with me.
Carmen is at the top of any scale in terms of friendliness, and assistance. She is just a joy to be around. She radiates light and humility, with, of course, the greatest of efficiency to make your breakfast experience, even memorable.Carmen was the cherry on the top of a delicious dessert of my stay in Calexico.
Kudos and congratulations to the entire staff at Holiday Inn Calexico.
Mexico Trip

Stayed for two nights while we went to Mexico. The front desk was very friendly and helpful, getting us whatever we needed. The breakfast was awesome! My son actually was very impressed. We usually stay at Best Western, but their elevator was broken and there was no way us being seniors with health problems we could carry our luggage down a long hallway, up stairs and down a long hallway. We will be back next trip to Mexico. Loved the lighing in the bathroom! Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Thank you for being there for us.
