Keep Driving. You Can Do Better

Just over the New Mexico Border, Trinidad, Colorado. is best to pass by. Without a good reason to stay, the Holiday Inn, one of two top rated hotels in Trinidad, the other a newer La Quinta, are just off the Interstate 25 exit into town. You cannot walk to town from these motels. For shopping, visiting restaurants or taking a neighborhood stroll, you must drive downtown. By contrast, within walking distance of the Holiday Inn, you spot, a hefty hike down a hill, just a large service station-convenience store, and a brand new store. It’s glass-coated, around three stories high It is called Native Roots, a purveyor of recreational marijuana.
This Holiday Inn, the tired forebear of fresh variations like Holiday Inns Express—remains what it has been for thirty-some years. Room 317 came with all the right amenities—microwave, coffee, iron, etc.—a fully equipped bathroom and the usual negatives, like windows they won’t let you open so you can sleep in the fresh autumn air. The room was spacious enough for two, and clean. But the company defined its formulaic features, its cookie-cutter rooms that look the same from Key West to Anchorage, well back in the last century. It should have buried them there.
We might have found some succor in our inn’s restaurant—the Peaks, it is called—which we opted to try instead of venturing downtown. The Peaks has a long welcoming bar, seductive lighting and a dining area. We were shown to a booth. The booth had its own television. Only the server knew how to turn the thing off. We were handled a menu showing nothing inspired, just Reuben sandwiches, grilled salmon, steaks, fried things. We were directed to a similarly uninspired salad bar. The wine was okay. The service was amateur. Our plates empty, we asked for the check. The server brought the check, and left the empty plates.
Good for one night.

We stayed here because we were traveling with pets and the convenience of the on-site restaurant and bar. The food was very good and the wines were served in proper wine glasses. We were on first floor for pets and the ceiling was high. The room could have been cleaner. There were objects left on the floor from previous guests. Toilet did not work well. Had to call maintenance. Was glad I carried my febreeze with me.
Perfect spot to stop for the night

My daughter and I stayed here on our way from TX to CO. This hotel is quiet, clean, the people are friendly and helpful, and it is in a great location. They are pet-friendly which is a must for us as we travel with our dog. Be sure to call ahead if traveling with a pet, because I think they limit the number of pet rooms. There is a restaurant in the hotel, and they deliver room service! The selection was great, and since we had our dog with us, it worked out perfectly that we could eat both dinner and breakfast in our room. We will definitely stay here again!
Keep Driving...or stay in Pueblo

Let me begin by saying that I tried to post this review 4 times to the IHG site for this review and it was rejected as it stated I reference another hotel brand. As you can read, I did not.
I was warned by family not to stay here but the reviews had good ratings so I took a chance. We should have just kept driving.
During our vacation, this was the priciest hotel and not worth what we paid. Here are some other issues:
1) Asked for a handicap room since my wife was in an accident with an injured leg. The room was on the 3rd floor. The bathroom/shower sitting for handicap was dislodged from the wall. The room was fit for those being hearing impaired with flashing lights that were not attached to the wall. (Don't understand why you put handicap rooms on 2nd floor or higher).
2) Curtains had holes. Maybe they were going for the "stars" in the room look.
3) Hallways and room smelled like mildew.
4) We wore socks in the room as we felt the room was that dirty.
5) The only ice machine in the hotel was on the 2nd floor which is great if you are on the 2nd floor. If needing ice as you enter the hotel, you got to stop on the 2nd then back on up to the 3rd floor.
6) Asked the bartender for wine. He served in a highball glass and stated they are considering ordering wine glasses. Really. Also, two different people eating at the bar had to send their food back with a look of disgust.
Would Be Very Good If

Right on I25 so quick in and out. Typical HI except for the listed $140+ room price breakfast should be included as in most HI's. Quite busy HI as the two front desk persons were pressed to keep up. Mine was not well versed as she had no idea what a "Spire" member was. Took way longer to get upgraded than it should have. Room was clean, modern and even though we faced the Interstate the room was very quiet. Maybe being on the third floor had something to do with this. Room 309 cannot shut the blackout curtains all the way so expect to get some light in the morning early hours.
