What People are saying

this place is just ok, but you need to read this review

i was staying here for a conference the first week in November. was on the 6th floor, room 618, facing the street. BIG MISTAKE. for some reason, the local Nice street department thinks is necessary to have 3-5 men with BACKPACK blowers start right in front of the hotel while a street sweeper follows behind them cleaning the street. what does this mean? If you are on the even side of the building (i.e. street side) you will get woken up at 7-7:15AM M-F to the sound of multiple blowers, no matter what floor you are on. this isn't good. while NOT the hotels fault, its still a bit rough to hear at 7am.
if you can upon check in, ask for a room on the ODD side, at least that should provide you some quiet early in the morning.

This hotel is also in a good location, while no beach view, you are a 10 min walk to the water. Good restaurants along the way too. breakfast buffet was included. Service of the staff was helpful and our room was cleaned well daily. as per usual, this is a small euro hotel so don't expect large American size rooms. it was only the two of us in the room and they pushed two double beds together to make a very large King, so that was nice. we needed to mind the gap but no real issues.

would i stay here again if i were in Nice? nah probably not. there is a Nice Le Meridian and Hyatt both water front that offer amazing views. If money is no object there is always the Le Negresco......super nice but VERY expensive (two drinks and cheese plate for 70 Euros, no joke)

Ideal location

We were lucky to be on the eighth floor. Spacious room with good view. Beds comfortable and, thankfully, the windows opened. Plastic glasses (why do the French like them?) but at least they were well-made. Only a few niggles like (as usual) dim and awkward bedside lights. The staff were very welcoming and helpful and answered an email promptly (I'd left my sunglasses behind). There was building work in the daytime in Victor Hugo Boulevard but we had been warned and it did not trouble us. Easy walking distance to front and main square. We did not eat there as breakfast bars and other restaurants easy to find en route to the Promenade.

Close to everything classic hotel on main road in Nice

Close to the train station, close to the promenade de anglais and the shops. The hotel is a nice business hotel, with all the amenities but also with a bit more panache than the usual business hotel. It’s location is perfect and the staff absolutely outstanding. We were offered a late check out withbeven asking and everything went very well with our stay. The bar is very nice and the terrace at street level, perfect for people watching. A great choice in Nice.

HJ's Overall Rank : Very Good (4.5 / 5)

Stayed : 2017
Duration : 8 nights; Non-smoking Leisure Room w 1 King Bed
Summary : Francesco made the difference!

*** The Good ***

- Comfortable bed in a modern room. In our upper-floor room, we never heard any traffic from below and had a pretty good view of the surrounding area. The small church diagonally to the right opposite the hotel is beautifully lit up at night.

- Unfortunately, i can't recall for this hotel whether we had a shower/bathtub combo or if we had a shower unit (as we stayed in a number of hotels in our month-long 17th anniversary trip and i don't have a photo of the bathroom as a reminder :P ) so i can't post my usual comments on that.
However, i do remember that it was an acceptable bathroom with satisfactory water pressure, with consistent hot water for showering available all day long and did not run hot-cold during a shower. (otherwise i would've grumbled for sure... and yes, the proper English contraction of "would have" is properly spelt "would've", NOT "would of" :) )
Solid toilet flush with no chokes while we were there.

- Centrally located. 5 minute walk to the waterfront (plages) southbound. 5 minute walk to the Avenue Jean Medecin shopping belt eastbound (2 excellent Galleries Lafayettes there). 5 more minutes south-eastbound beyond Jean Medecin and you hit the old town area with lots of eateries (and the always gorgeous Fenocchio ice cream at Place Rossetti! ).

- Front office supervisor Francesco is frankly the most customer-oriented hotel front-desk representative i have ever met in all my 35+ years of traveling countries ranging from Australia to Vatican/Vietnam (haven't been to Zambia/Zimbabwe yet so A-to-V will have to do for now). He is truly an asset to the Holiday Inn Nice. We arrived later than expected due to the long TGV ride from CDG to Nice-ville but he made the check-in smooth and faultless. When we got to our upgraded room, we found a bottle of champagne in an ice-bucket waiting for us, along with a fruit basket and a congratulatory note (like i said, we were celebrating our 17th anniversary). Francesco really went out of his way to make us feel so comfortable and at home in so many ways that i cannot name them all. Truly an excellent host in every sense of the word ! :)

*** The Bad ***

- Quite frankly, i can't recall anything majorly bad about the Holiday Inn Nice. If i was forced to really try to find something to nit-pick about, it would have been that the restaurant was closed for a private function on the last day when we wanted to have a drink, or that the nearest carpark was at the public Parking Indigo a block behind the hotel but both of those aren't really their fault and they do have a discounted parking rate.
Why then a 4.5 instead of a 5? Because my rating is a composite of many things including the property star rating. The Holiday Inn line is at most a 4* chain and i have stayed at 5s in Asia before where the properties are far and away among the best in the world. Thus, if Francesco was working at the Strings in Shinagawa (see my other review) and he did the same things there as he did during our stay in Nice, that would be valid grounds for a 6 (i.e. busting my scale). :)

*** The Ugly ***

- None that i can think of. This hotel really hits the sweet spot as far as the Cote d'Azure is concerned in terms of price, quality, service & location into account.

*** Visited Notables ***

- Fenocchio at Place Rossetti for Ice Cream - perfect during summer weather - we went there twice in 4 days :)

- Shifu at Place Grimaldi - after 4 days of western/french food, we wanted something lighter and came across Shifu while walking to the nearest plage. As we live in SE Asia, we know what Chinese food should taste like. We ordered "san-mee" and it came out done in the HK style. WA'ed a picture to our HK friend and she confirmed it was authentic as well. Normally, we'd be hesitant in eating at a Chinese joint with only 'ang-moh' customers visible but this joint is the closest thing you're gonna get to real HK/CN food if you have a Chinese food craving.

- Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild - totally awesome villa with well-kept gardens and a cafe that served Monbana Honey Shortbread with the Hot Chocolate i had - Monbana, are you listening, please sell the Honey Shortbread at your retail stores like you do with the other flavours !!!!!

- The village of Eze - take a day trip there by car and have lunch and drinks at Chateau Eza overlooking the Cote D'Azure. Easily the best (and most expensive but worth every eurocent) meal we had in France.

weekend in the city

Hotel is located walking distance from the promenade, shops and many differenciated restaurants. Rooms are pretty spacious, with desk, armchair, minibar, safe and coffee machine. Bathrooms are decent size, with very basic acessories, hair dryer has to be picked form the reception as well as iron and ironing board, if needed. Breakfast is pretty basic, with some hot options like scrambled eggs, bacos, tomatoes and mushrooms. Cold cuts, jogurts, some sweets, coffee from the machine.
